You get a squared length for the butt cut a V in it to match a V cut on a square ash shaft the same dimensions as the butt wood glue them together and start a very long planning job. The points of course turn out rounded not machined. At least that's how I did it twenty years ago, all professional cue makers please stop laughing. Will email you a photo of one Bill feel to post it.
That's my understanding of how a butterfly spliced cue is made

I'm sure I can see the faint outline of a squared off shape at the root of the ebony.

It could be that Bill but in your original photo I thought the splice points looked pointed as well though maybe just the photo angle. After all this might just attempt another.

I'd love nothing more than you to make a cue again sir.

That search included old cues, new cues, a Trevor white c cue, etc etc.
Made me appreciate, that it's definitely the cue, and not the maker.
When I bought it from you I was a bit nervous about the specs (it was shorter than I'm used to and I'd never played with an 8mm tip before) but as you say it just feels right. The shaft is strange too, no perfect chevrons but although I have other cues that are more aesthetically pleasing to look at, they don't play as well. As you say, it's a lesson well learned. Can't ever see me parting with it but if I do will give you first refusal.

When you find a cue that good, it's strange but if/when you go through a patch where you're not playing well it helps that you know that it's your problem and nothing to do with the cue itself.
