  • Wooldridge shark with rounded splice root

This brought back memories of my old welsh pool trading shark cue.

But, the root of the ebony splices looks wrong . filled in perhaps ?

Looks alright to me? Have still got your WPT shark Bill, and it's still my playing cue....my 2nd favourite cue after my TW.

Cool, glad it's still providing service. I still remember the base of the ebony fingers being more squared off, like the 2nd cue linked.

Maybe I'm just going through the change . .

Glad to see you on here again . and your profile pic . is that Mr Wilson ?

Was going to say the same Bill, had one myself and bought another for a mate of mine - both had square edges and didn't look painted on like that does.

Thanks Bill - D'oh, I see it now. The butt looks right though - so maybe a 2nd/replacement shaft??

Yes that's Cliff, my favourite player as a kid. I don't post much here these days, but still visit every week. The cue you sold me is a gem, wish I had more time to play though...

Are you not comparing a supposedly hand spliced cue with a machine spliced cue, having said that it looks dodgy.

both cues are machine spliced ( butterfly spliced ) Wooldridge shark cues.
they should both look the same. imo.

At the time i sold it, I didn't realise how much that cue felt right.
Took me another9 cues to find another ( parris limited ).
That search included old cues, new cues, a Trevor white c cue, etc etc.
Made me appreciate, that it's definitely the cue, and not the maker.

Any butterfly spliced cue I made was hand spliced not machined.

Ok.I bow to your superior knowledge.

In that case, I was still comparing two of the same model of cue ( handspliced ).

linked is the shark cue with squared off bit at the root of the 2 ebony splices.

                          http://www.handmadecues.com/2-Cues/36-shark.htm

nothing like the rounded off bit in the ebay welsh shark.

You get a squared length for the butt cut a V in it to match a V cut on a square ash shaft the same dimensions as the butt wood glue them together and start a very long planning job. The points of course turn out rounded not machined. At least that's how I did it twenty years ago, all professional cue makers please stop laughing. Will email you a photo of one Bill feel to post it.

Is it possible that some have a square base as they have a tenon joint into the ebony from the shaft? Obviously if you create a V you can't do that.
