This wood looks a lot like maple.

It is a lot like maple, with no gain but has arrows, as the cue I use myself is beech as well.

Better than maple IMO, stiffer, so a slim tapered cue can be made that isn't whippy which makes it perfect for UK 8 ball.

The arrows might be too faint to notice.

They are not as my playing cue is beech and they do show up but don't use them to aim, so don't bother me either way.

Because the grain in beech isn't soft like it is with ash there's no grain filler used so it's not enhanced.

I have a walter donaldson hand spliced ash cue from around 1950 its a two piece cue ive had it around 12 years. Beautiful wood

"Dawson billiard champion in 1889 1890 1901 & 1903.In March 27th 1893 he made the 698 break and the 613 in September in 1890 so this cue would be after 1893 this is a early one so between 1893 1900.Dawson was born December 20th 1866 in Huddersfield ."

I would bow down to Andy Hunters experience on this but I would suggest this is too good to be an early one - did andy see these pictures?
