Aurora's grain filler works wonders with few of my cues.

I have used ordinary ebony wood stain (the gel type)...It worked, but the issue is then sanding off the excess stain. I wouldn't do this on a quality cue! That said, the grain has probably been lost due to sanding so then you can try it as long as you are happy to lose a fraction of size on the cue. Filler is obviously better if you want a smooth finish on the cue, but that would cost slightly more.

            CHEERS EVERYONE,
I could not find the aurora product, so I have gone with Vmax's suggestion and ordered a pot of Liberon patinating wax,
I do appreciate the 'newspaper tip/ idea, but would hate to be walking around with black ink transferred to my hands and possibly a white shirt.
Fingers crossed Liberon will apply easily enough.

            Once again Thanks fellas
            Ian

Earth pigment off ebay then mix it with grain filler (it will go jet black if you put enough in)..apply to cue thoroughly and leave overnight to dry...then just sand back with fine sandpaper and finish off with 0000 grade wire wool

                  JUST A QUICK UPDATE
after making the purchase I have found out the the ingredients of Liberon patinating wax, is almost identical to that of black Kiwi shoe polish, so if you find yourselfs reading this thread save yourself a few quid and go buy Kiwi shoe polish wax.I tested some out and it worked beautifully,

prepare cue with a 1200grit wet and dry paper
Rub Kiwi wax generously into the cue.
Allow 30mins to dry, then wipe of excess with some cue oil on a clean cloth, then buff after oil has dried 'another hour or so'.

Make sure you cue is really smooth BEFORE applying the wax, if its rubbed down with 1200grit great.

As the Liberon wax was still in the post i used the following materials to complete a really nice job
                  1200grit wet and dry paper
                  Kiwi black shoe polish
Cue oil was Liquid Gold really nice oil available from www.handmadecues.com (uk based)

When it arrives I will use the Liberon on another cue to compare the end results.

                  HTH

I have been using kiwi black shoe polish on my cues for about 23 years with no issues. I have said this on another thread but some people just laughed !

Warren, care to share any pictures of what it looks like? Would be great if we can see a before and after, but obviously that won't be possible...
Also, doesn't shoe polish make a mess on hands, clothes, cloth, floor etc? Would also expect it to put some type of finish on the cue

Hi warren, would like to know how you do it. Can you provide some guidance here?

Currently my cue have alot of "holes" as the ash came out when i send my cue to be altered. Is it possible to play with the open grains, any negative impact?

Hi liang, if your cue has a lot of holes in the ash the i dont think that the boot/shoe polish will help with this issue. Need something a bit more harder than shoe polish.Easy to apply to any cue just hold the cue and use shoe polish brush to brush the cue making sure you go across the cue not up and down. Leave to dry for about 10mins then polish with a lint free cloth and thats all there is to it. Hope this helps.
