  • mushroomed ferrule?

I am toying with the idea of having a mushroomed ferrule made for the northwest cue that no one seems to want.
I have tried playing with a mushroomed tip and never really got on with it.
Is the idea technically sound, and what potential issues could it cause?

it would be pointless costing money you would need to spend again to make the cue normal again if you wanted to sell it unless you could find someone else who is not normal to buy it

its not uncommon for people to think that all that is that is holding them back from the next level is getting something different but its not, its their ability and the fact they spend valuable time and money on things that are not important when the most important thing is just to buy a normal cue with a normal size tip and practice without worrying about pointless different things they can change and just think about potting balls

I can replace a ferrule myself, so only cost would be the price of the brass, and easy enough to switch back. I bought the cue by mistake without measuring the tip, 8.5mm is just too small for my game, seemed like an easy and cheap way to try different tip sizes without permanently altering a cue?

So you want a cone shaped ferrule going from 8.5 to9.5

I think its a good idea, you can have the thin shaft with the flex and whip that go along with it and the tickness you want in the tip, I have tought of this before for a very small ferrule cue i have, it is a great cue with to small a ferrule, dont want to lose the lenght to get a bigger ferrule, this is the answer to that problem. Might look odd, better than a mushroom tip. Cheers and good luck, keep us posted, I would surely try one. just get one made with a very thick wall, fit it, then taper the ferrule to required specs. I think Peter Ebdon will buy one for his cue, Cheers Lol
I try hard, play hard and dont always succeed, at first.!!!!:snooker:

Yeah, or possibly slightly smaller and continue the taper through the tip, should be able to shape it easy enough using the ferrule as a guide, and would only leave a very slight mushroom.

Never heard of this - but if you are the type of player that pulls the cue right back over the hand on the back swing it may complicate things - or maybe if you cued off a cushion and liked to be level - although speaking for myself it would put me off just because it is bigger than the ferrule and I might find it distracting you might think on the other hand be onto something - I remember when mushroom tips where all in fashion after Ebdon and others first did this - the following week every man and his dog down the club had a go at it - but it died off.

Don't knock it till you try it - cheap to change back if its a no show - Might start a trend eh?

Can't see this , surely a mushroomed ferrule means you will put a bigger tip on . Why not buy a cue with a larger ferrule ?

Does anyone make such a thing ? If so , any pics / links ?
Still trying to pot as many balls as i can !

i imagine it would have an odd resonance, a dullish sound, and mess with your timing

After a quick search on the internet, I found this. say, the FRL is about 9.5 mm. but you can put a 9.8/10 tip on it !!
                            So,, maybe is possible!!
                            anyway,,, good luk !!!

i suppose it would look like this, and if so the coned end is outside of the taper so on contact with the white i see it as resonating outside of the cue. this would feel strange and very different to using a mushroom tip because the edge of the tip is over the edge of the ferrule and therefore that vibe evaporates on impact
