The advantage to doing it as I do it, is that the cue and tip will be in front of you at chest height as you cut it, or, it can be held over a flat work surface, like done in the video clip. This keeps everything clearly in view and allows any adjustment to the blade angle as you go. Of course, it can be done slowly (much slower than I did it in the clip even) and tiny slithers of tip can be removed at a time. The adjustment to cutting angle is far easier to my mind than by doing it upside down, whereby you are unable to actually see the angle of cut very well, while at the same time having to keep downward pressure on the cue in order to stop you ripping the tip back off again.

The greatest advantage to this method is that there will be (or shouldn't be when you're adept at it) no flat edges to the tip at all. It wil be perfectly rounded and will follow the shape of the ferrule exactly if you wish.
I sometimes use your method after watching your vid ages ago, usually when I've been asked to fit a mushroom tip but flared out so its flush at the ferrule and then tapers out \ /
    So cheers Trevor

Also a lot of tip brands only come in 10 or 11mm sizes. Still always better to fit a slightly larger tip than the size of the ferrule as its less important to get the tip perfectly centered which can be tricky when the tip is the same size as the ferrule

          Help fitting laminated tip

Thanks guys. I think I'll practice Trev's technique on my old cue (once I get my new cue) with a few old elks that I have. Also in future I'll try and get 10 mm tips so there's less excess.

              Help fitting laminated tip

Okay so I managed to fit my Talisman tip by using a swann morten scalpel (thought I'd update this thread).

Next question is that I have an ADR SS tip that I want to fit. Now the Talisman was pre domed but the ADR tip is not, so how do I shape the ADR tip ? do you cut around the tip to get it started then sand\file to shape or just sand\file once it is on the cue ?

Just take your time and sand it.

Never up and down with the file...never....only downward strokes.

I sometimes use these - quite handy in my opinion.
