      +1

The Americans have been using these for years to clean off the chalk build up on maple shaft pool cues which get a lot dirtier than snooker shafts because of the larger tips and therefore more chalk as a potential problem. Should also work well with ash shafts. I also agree if the problem is particularly bad, the shaft may need oiling afterwards or even a refinish.

You don't need anything special, just soap up a wet flannel, ring it out and clean the shaft with it and towel it dry straight away.

If the chalk is really ingrained, which means the grain filler has probably fallen out of the cue or there wasn't any to begin with, get an toothbrush and dip it in some meths (this is less smelly than white spirit) and gently brush the chalk out. You will need to re-oil the cue afterwards, though that isn't hard to do. Actually, it's easy.

Dumb question, but do you mean methyl alcohol? And what is white spirit exactly? Thanks in advance.
The bitter taste of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Yes, methylated spirits, purple colour, available in Wilko, Wickes, B&Q. I always have some being a keen DIYer so it costs nothing. Does a great job. Re-oil your cue afterwards, cleaning that much chalk is going to lift all the oil in the wood out. I haven't seen the stuff Ramon has recommended. I'd be interested to know if this can lift all the chalk without removing any oil?

Works for me.....then dry off with some kitchen towel, then buff to a mirror shine with a bar/cue towel....winner!

If you do babys bottom first and the cue after would it not work as a grain filler also? Lovely patina but don't hold it to close to your nose
