  • Machine Spliced vs Hand Spliced

Always wonder why some people look down on the humble machine spliced "Oh its only a machine spliced" is a remark that I hear from time to time "They only use the cheaper shafts for machine spliced" is another Well I may be lucky but I beg to differ I have a Phoenix machine spliced no frills plain ebony butt that has a faultless shaft with a blank belly and perfect chevrons it plays like a dream and my Hand Spliced cues are now confined to my modest show case Ok I was guilty of the "Must have a hand spliced" ! mind set but cant help thinking did I waste my money ? wonder if any other members have spent their cash on a all singing all dancing cue only to revert back to something much more humble or am I "just a twit" ! .

MY CUE 1/ On the badge at the bottom it has the words THAI SUPERVISE. 2/ The sticker on the back is a sort of hologram gold in colour (Not a plain label) with the Omin logo and a serial number. 3/ The 3/4 joint has the Omin logo etched (Real Deep) into brass 4/ The mini butt has the Omin logo etched into butt (No logo on side) So the answer is no. Chinese Hmmmmmmmmmmm ! what do you think.

That was what I was thinking. Strange that they should copy an old outdated model as this one is obviously new.

Back on topic. Nothing at all wrong with Machine spliced cues. They play as well as a hand spliced. Just look cheaper and less attractive. To me anyway.

If anyone is looking for a cheapish machine spliced cue, there is a nice Peradon Century on ebay which is just about nearing its money I would say but another few quid might pinch it.

I recently sold my JP 'Mastercue' which was Machined Spliced. Lovely cue and was a fraction of the price of a 'Hand Spliced' equivalent.

Denja cant agree with you more I have been searching for the perfect cue for two years now and have spent
thousands on hand spliced cues all from Craftsman and everyone Phoenix. Was never out of the shop every
weekend spent 4/5 hrs down there looking for the one. My mate picked up a machine spliced 1 piece plain ebony
Phoenix at £90 and proceeded potting balls of the lamp shade with it. Got to say he plays off -50 in the league
so a very good player who knows a good cue when he finds one. I had a knock with it and wow was hooked solid
shaft lovely chevrons and blank underside all what I look for in a cue. This cue had the mui tip on and I was hooked
straight away plays with no throw at all and I get tons of reaction from it. So there you go my search is over and backs
up your theory looks and cost means nothing its all in the shaft and tip. Can't be more happy with my new weapon
it's all I will ever need in a cue and at a fraction of the top end cues I have spent thousands on over the years.

Sounds like similar cue to mine I think around about £ 90 was what I paid also from Craftsman (snap) I love the blank belly no humps or bumps and the ash has the feel and look of being aged correctly although I am no expert !

they hit the balls the same, how it's spliced doesn't make it play any different and a machine spliced club cue will play the same as a hand spliced cue with an 'ultimate' shaft (there is no such thing, it's just called that to make you pay more) - as Terry said commentating the other day, it's just an implement and will do what you make it do

they do cost more though because they take longer to make because people like how pretty they look, though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, some people prefer beauty to function as they can't make a cue do what it can do

I can understand people preferring either hand or machine spliced cues as the basic construction is quite different. It does surprise me though that people are happy to pay for purely aesthetic features such as extra splicing or in-lays.While everyone wants to be happy with the look of their cue such things add nothing to its playing quality but must cost in terms of the raw materials & skilled labour involved. My own preference is for a mature ash shaft & plain ebony butt.As such I have had three cues since 1990.The first was a Cannon (about £100 I think) and when this was broken I bought a Peradon Royal(£135) which was stolen & replaced with another Peradon Royal. While fairly "plain" to look at & not hugely expensive these cues are all of good quality with noneof the cost spent on "ornamentation".

I sell snooker cues here in Brazil, many brands: Mastercraft, Peradon, Phoenix, Mastercue, Niche, Unclevit, Maximus, etc..

And i must say, Phoenix is one of the best brands out there!

                            - Great finishing (i always ask for oil finish, no varnish)
                            - Great ash shafts, "ultimate" arrows on 95% of cues, many with "blank belly" for smooth bridge
                            - Good price
                            - Nice deliver times, they delivered me 25 custom cues in 2 months (production + shipping time)

If the machine splicing is accurate, it should be as good as hand spliced. The only physical difference is that hand spliced cues usually have the shaft down to the butt which may increase feel, maybe not. Old machine spliced cues can be badly fitted with gaps though, the ones I've seen.
