  • Mike Wooldridge Back Spin Ferrule.....Whats so special about it?

I just want to know, whats the crack with this new ferrule?
I believe Ebdon has one.....what does it change?
    Safety doesn't win frames.......Potting does!

Ebdon doesn't use BS, he uses a Stamford cue with a specially designed ferrule for him to be low deflection (little throw). It's a regular hollowed, thin wall ferrule made from a researched metal. Something akin to titanium maybe but Deano can probably tell us more. The Stamford ferrule reduces throw of the cue ball, which helps if you cue across the ball accidentally or have poor technique, you pot more balls apparently because the white stays on line more through its travel. And Peter finds this useful, LOL!

Correct Ebdon has a Stamford Zenith ferrule nothing like the MW BlackSpin.
I believe the BlackSpin is not a ring of metal (or whatever material) around the end of a piece of wood but what you see is solid material with a peg/leg/spur/tenon that goes into the shaft.
Very similar to what US pool cue makers have been doing for many years.
Supposedly it give more power-control to the cue ball from the cue due to greater surface area inside to disperse the shock on cue ball contact.
Some have said that they have noticed less deflection as well.
Not sure what the material is (closely guarded secret by MW ) but don't think it is titanium.

some people have looked it, some other have not noticed anything special as with all things snooker - personal experience/preference/etc

Stamford seem to have stopped making the zenith ferrule, i can;t seem to find it on their site any-more, a year or 2 back it was pretty prominently featured on it.

yes it does seem to have been dropped from the website for some time now - they may still do it for the "special" customers? anyone know if still available or have they dropped it entirely?

The Blackspin system does everything Mike says it will do.

                Agree and i love it.

I cannot rate them highly enough honestly as they are magnificent.
If it is called " Common sense " why is it so rare???

Chappy5 I am buying a MW cue and don’t know whether to get the bullseye or bs ferrule. It’s difficult to know as haven’t tried either and can’t. Making a decision blind really. Any advice/information on what you’ve found appreciated

Black Spin or Bull's Eye is a matter of preference, except perhaps that for the blackspin you need to keep an eye on your tip a bit more and using a pad is required. something to do with the blackspin bonding to the tip better than brass. I had a bull's eye fitted on my wooldridge that I ordered from Mike in the 90's as I did not want to change the ferrule style of what I am used to. No regrets

When my John Parris cue needed a new ferrule, I asked Mike Wooldridge to fit a black spin. Very happy with it, but you do need to be more careful when changing tips than you would with a traditional brass job. That is my experience anyway.

When I met Mike he explained it to me that he drills out from the ferrule towards the butt so much and fills it with a ??? Rod with the aim being to ensure the life of the ferrule ( poor explanation I know but it was a long time ago I might have it all wrong) I do remember him saying that it also reduced throw although that was not the intent.
I had just sold him some pear cues for him to sell from his shop and negotiated that he sent me one back black spin included. Trouble was I only had one frame with it not long enough to really try it when the next visitor here bought it.
