  • Unsatisfactory cue alteration

    Hi Guys

Wanted to canvass opinion on what I perceive to be some shoddy workmanship that I have just noticed on a cue alteration I had done. I won't mention any names but suffice to say its a very well known cue manufacturer. The background is this. I have a 3/4 butt Riley burwat that I have owned for nearly 30 years. It is my pride and joy and I decided a number of months ago to have some alterations done primarily as I needed a new ferrule. I ended up forking out nearly £200 for the mods which were:

    New ferrule and tip fitted.
To have a female thread fitted to the butt of my cue to accept a screw in extension and mini butt.
Purchase of a screw in extension and a full ebony mini butt (this is the "streaky" ebony but I was advised about this beforehand and I wasn't bothered by this).
    Cue cleaned and refinished.
The price was also going to include a leather pad to protect the butt extension thread.

Now I waited nearly 2 months from sending the cue to to getting it back and to be honest the response to my email inquiries regarding progress were few and far between!! Additionally when I got the cue back it was minus the leather protective pad for the butt thread. I emailed them back about this and they apologized saying it was an oversight and that if I sent the cue back they would make amends. WTF? Surely these would be a standard size consistent with the female threads they were using so why would I need to send the cue back (in the end I didn't bother!).

Now to the crux of the problem. I have had the cue back for a few months now and generally was happy with the work that had been done. New ferrule - great. Finish on cue - fantastic. Extensions and mini butt - no problem at all. I had noticed on occasion however though that the wood around the butt thread was roughing up a little more than I would have expected but never gave this much thought. The Riley's where I play has carpeted areas for snooker and uncarpeted areas for pool (I play both). Tonight however I was playing snooker (with my godson who I just have to say has terrible taste in music) and noticed that the female thread was not fitted flush with the butt but stands proud 2-3 mm. The person that altered the cue had simply fitted a leather pad around the thread so it appeared to be sitting flush!!!!! See attached picture. Now I don't know about you guys but to me this is unacceptable. I paid not a small amount of money to have these alterations done and I expect the workmanship to be of a high standard (in keeping with the persons reputation). I have never seen any cue - cheap or custom made with a butt thread that sits anything other than flush. I am more than a little angry at this but thought I would see what the forum thought before I ring this guy (I'm not disposed to be polite to him at the moment.......). Please tell me what you think and if I'm overreacting.

    Cheers

    David

I'm confused! You say they forget to include leather butt pad, then go on to say it's there????

No there are two leather pads, The first one was to be supplied to protect the thread which I didn't receive, the second was already fitted around the thread which I didn't know was there till earlier tonight! Sorry for the confusion....

So has that come away by itself or have you pulled it off?
Seems normal to me, it looks like it protrudes enough for the thickness of the leather.? How else would you do it??

Probably a silly question - why not just tell the cue guy you are not happy with the repair and give him a chance to rectify it rather than post it on here?

Don't bite his head off just be nice about it because that will get you further in my experience.

Came away itself JRC. No what I mean is that the thread should not IMHO be sitting proud at all and should be flush with the wood of the butt itself. Never seen a butt thread on any cue that sits proud like that.

I'm confused now ... surely the butt joint is normally fitted flush to the wood ... what David (I think) is saying is the joint was fitted proud of the wood and a circle of leather fitted to make it appear flush which doesn't seem right to me ...

[edit] my post and David's post above crossed in the ether ...

well it doesn't seem right to me but being angry never helps ... so as Byrom suggests, calm down first and then contact the cuemaker concerned, politely explain the problem and see what they say

it does seem very strange though - presumably the hole in the butt wasn't drilled deep enough to take the female joint but wouldn't they have noticed that when they offered the joint up into the hole prior to glueing it? I'm probably way off as I am more than useless at stuff like that ...

Well i have also never seen a cue with this leather ring thing ;-)
Maybe done so the extension would fix properly? Ie if joint flush to wood, then leather would be proud of it and hence extensions would not be solid fix????

Yep it looks to me as though the pad was put on and the the joint installed to be flush with the pad (instead of flush with the wood). This might work fine if the pad is of good solid quality and properly installed, which doesn't seem to be the case here. Zak's cues uses a thick leather pad on some of his cues and he installed a joint in one of these for me that was flush with the leather and it was fine. I think I've seen early GBL cues with this arrangement as well in pics, have any of you guys seen these in person?

But what I can't figure out is where a second leather pad comes into all of this?? And I wouldn't be surprised if the maker couldn't work that out either.

This is not something I have ever seen either - it had me wondering too.

Seems like a possible communication mix up to me. It's as easy to fit the SD joint flush as it is to fit it standing proud, so otherwise why do it? Whatever the reason, good luck in getting it sorted how you want.
