Hi Guys
Wanted to canvass opinion on what I perceive to be some shoddy workmanship that I have just noticed on a cue alteration I had done. I won't mention any names but suffice to say its a very well known cue manufacturer. The background is this. I have a 3/4 butt Riley burwat that I have owned for nearly 30 years. It is my pride and joy and I decided a number of months ago to have some alterations done primarily as I needed a new ferrule. I ended up forking out nearly £200 for the mods which were:
New ferrule and tip fitted.
To have a female thread fitted to the butt of my cue to accept a screw in extension and mini butt.
Purchase of a screw in extension and a full ebony mini butt (this is the "streaky" ebony but I was advised about this beforehand and I wasn't bothered by this).
Cue cleaned and refinished.
The price was also going to include a leather pad to protect the butt extension thread.
Now I waited nearly 2 months from sending the cue to to getting it back and to be honest the response to my email inquiries regarding progress were few and far between!! Additionally when I got the cue back it was minus the leather protective pad for the butt thread. I emailed them back about this and they apologized saying it was an oversight and that if I sent the cue back they would make amends. WTF? Surely these would be a standard size consistent with the female threads they were using so why would I need to send the cue back (in the end I didn't bother!).
Now to the crux of the problem. I have had the cue back for a few months now and generally was happy with the work that had been done. New ferrule - great. Finish on cue - fantastic. Extensions and mini butt - no problem at all. I had noticed on occasion however though that the wood around the butt thread was roughing up a little more than I would have expected but never gave this much thought. The Riley's where I play has carpeted areas for snooker and uncarpeted areas for pool (I play both). Tonight however I was playing snooker (with my godson who I just have to say has terrible taste in music) and noticed that the female thread was not fitted flush with the butt but stands proud 2-3 mm. The person that altered the cue had simply fitted a leather pad around the thread so it appeared to be sitting flush!!!!! See attached picture. Now I don't know about you guys but to me this is unacceptable. I paid not a small amount of money to have these alterations done and I expect the workmanship to be of a high standard (in keeping with the persons reputation). I have never seen any cue - cheap or custom made with a butt thread that sits anything other than flush. I am more than a little angry at this but thought I would see what the forum thought before I ring this guy (I'm not disposed to be polite to him at the moment.......). Please tell me what you think and if I'm overreacting.
Cheers
David
