Well, you can't go wrong with the Aurora Cues method on their website. No-one can finish more finely than they do. But I don't take their finish to it's ultimate but drop the last few polishes to leave things a bit less glossy.

I'm not doubting your credentials (if you are who I think that you are), nor that you know more than me about every aspect of the game. Evil may prosper when good men do nothing. There is no requirement that anyone be polite, helpful, or supportive. It's in my nature to be open and opinionated. I accept that I don't know everything, and that I might talk rubbish. I live my life in the hope that I may help people where I can, and be helped where I need it and others are happy to. It's how we learn. That doesn't seem to be the way here, whether that's a result of an unfortunate brief moment in time, or being weighed down by past experience. It's okay. I don't expect anyone to change the world. I hoped to be set right, and contribute where I could....but really, I should just practice as much as possible.

True, but remember, if the method is on their website, then EVERYONE can finish just as finely as they do ( if they choose to ) ?

From what i have heard about their reputation in the past some are still waiting for their cues to be finished

Aurora make cues with exotic woods incl snake and produce the finest finish using their method so I can only assume that the burrs would be fine. You could email Richard and ask before beginning to be safe I guess.

I normally sand down the butt with a used piece of 2000 or 3000 grit paper. Then wax. I will make a video of this whole process and post a link on weekend. In my experience nothing works as well as this. The wood grain is enhanced. Butt retains the gloss for a long time. A simple buff with a soft cloth and it back to glossy after use

My credentials have nothing to do with my annoyance at this cretin making constant jibing posts to various folks on here, spouting persistent crap that does nothing but taunt people and cause conflict. If you can just take a look at some of the posts made, the tone and nature of them, and still feel that it's helpful to a place like this, then fine. However, my view is that it reduces the opportunity for people to have open and useful debate, where opinions and experiences are shared, learnt from and enjoyed. For reasons such as this (though admittedly there are others), I do not post here that much at all any more.

That's just me, and perhaps the forum is a better place for me not being here, but I''d wager it discourages others too.
Perhaps my own contributions over the last day or so have made you feel the same, but, I'd have a healthy bet that you would have come to exactly the same conclusion without my input, quite quickly too.

You will make up your own mind on it I'm sure.

Ok, the cue butt is pretty smooth though matt instead of glossy now (a few years use). I'd guestimate that it's already at 2-3000 grit from the papers in my shed, that sort of smoothness. Gonna whack some on now, two 'thin' layers I'm guessing, don't overdo it? Looking forward to the video, which could be a killer for everyone who then comes on tsf with the same issue.

Oh By the way I use Maguiars wax on ferrules. Best shine job on e ferrule ever and it leaves a wax coating on it that prevents the bras from oxidising quickly thus keeping a much longer shine. I bought a tin of the wax for 5 dollars five years ago and its still half full(i would expect at east a 1000 cue applications to a tin). Best and cheapest cue maintenance investment ever. even after use a simple 5 second buff with a soft cloth and the shine is back to new.

I have this bottle of Meguiars, it's a liquid with carnauba. I guess it's less concentrated carnauba so it may take more coats to get the finish than your tin? I've tried a couple of coats but it's not super shiny yet.

Personally prefer an oil finish to a wax one. Wax stops the wood absorbing oil, and if scratched off no longer protects. I prefer the feel of oil I like to feel the texture of the wood. I think I'm getting there, I'm going to stop oiling the shafts but keep going with the butts until I get the finish I want.

Lots of layers, lots of time, but it looks and feels good......and that oil is more than just skin deep.
