  • New Cue?

    Hi guys,
Im thinking of buying a new cue, im very happy with my MW Black Legend ash snooker cue and to be honest i generally am with my MW maple Black Shark english pool cue. However i feel the pool cue is a touch too long and abit heavy for my game (20oz). I would also if im honest prefer an ash pool cue. So i could have the current cue shortened and weight reduced (to 17oz im thinking) but i feel this is more likely to just ruin the cue and im better off having a new one made. The question is by who? another MW cue or by someone else? i really cannot decide.... if im honest over the 20 odd years i have played i have not swapped cues very much at all and have only really used a JPU, my current MW cues and a couple of vintage powerglides.

The rough spec i would be looking at is, 56" 17oz 8.5mm tip 1 piece ash with a approx 29 to 30mm butt.

I would very much appreciate some suggestions

    Thanks very much
    Tom

I've chopped and changed over the years, different cues and specs for each game etc..... I finally settled on a MW 3/4 9.25, 57.5 17.5oz I'm playing the best Snooker/Pool as I've ever done using only one cue.

If I was you I would be asking myself how long I am willing to wait & how much I am willing to spend; this should help narrow down your choice.

I think if you use like a 9.mill tip to 9-3 you can use one cue - starts to get harder if you go much over that using the same cue for both sports.

I think you can use any old cue for pool but myself preferred something whippy n light with a small tip - so nothing special - a whippy old cue like a Hunt and O Byrne black label will do ya.

My sentiments exactly- Ended up with 9.25mm tip for both which is about right. Just right for snooker and perfect for pool no unwanted side etc.....

              Hi Guys

Thanks very much for the input. My Ash MW snooker cue 57, 18, 30,9.25 is great and i could not be happier with it and yea i could use it for both and i have over the last few days used it for a number of games (pool) but it still feels a little too heavier than i would like, too long and having used a 8 to 8.5mm tip for pool, over the last 15 to 20 years the 9.25mm tip seemed huge! So i have ruled out using my snooker cue for both and come back to getting a new cue in 56, 8.5, 17ish, 29-30 and in ash. Im also toying with the idea of getting a really nice antique ash shaft and having it "remade" into a short slim pool cue?
Or i order a new cue to the above specs, or second hand? in terms of price and waiting time, time wise there is no rush i will wait as long as i need for the right cue, price wise max of £600 really, i would hope to not be buying another pool cue after this ideally.....

Any comments or help would be great and thanks for your patience guys. Regarding my current MW maple 1 piece pool spec cue i was planning to sell it but to be honest i cant bring myself to do it! so it looks like il be keeping it (much to the other halfs disappointment...)

              Thanks again guys
              Tom

My own MW ash Legend plays beautifully for snooker but the tip would be too big for pool. I really like the way the MW Legends hit, but this one is too heavy for me. I ordered the Legend recently but to my old spec thinking this would be perfect. Since coming back after a long absence I have now found I prefer a lighter cue. When this one is sold I will be definitely ordering another. Just a shame about the timing, but it does show that personal preference can change as time passes, whether for snooker or pool.

                  Hi guys,
Right i have made a decision, a Tony Glover one piece, 56, 16-17oz, 8.5 tip, 30mm butt, butt joint with a matching 6 inch extension. Aged/vintage ash shaft with a rosewood or cocobolo butt and single front splice? what wood yet. Your thoughts?

Just an update, i have been in contact with Tony Glover who has been very helpful and i will be going to his on monday (lucky he only works about 15mins drive away) to looks at some woods and discuss the shaft in particular. I want a lovely aged (that gorgeous rich orangy brown of 1900s cues) shaft. I like how they look and play and think it will look excellent next to the rosewood/cocobolo butt. I also need to decide on if i want and if so what to do about a front facing splice.

                      New Cue?

Sounds good mate. I love the crisp feel and aged look to ash shafts in a dark brown. If it were me id go for a 1 piece ash with 4 splices of the blackest of the black ebony and then jointed through the splices. Maybe single front faceing splice of cocobola wood.. Let us know how it goes? if all well i might consider one from Tony aswell.
