  • Oil or Wax

I know this has been asked before chaps, but apart from the visual (Colour) finish what are the advantages of one shaft finish over the other?

I've ordered some of ADR's cue wax, but I'm interested in why oil is used so prolifically over wax.

Once oil is totally dried off don't get as sticky, some wax becomes sticky with handling.

ADR's wax is very good. After applying, leave a few hours then wipe off and buffer very vigorously.
The smooth finish it leaves, even after one application is as good as any oils Ive used.
If you get oil, coutts one is very good too.
      Experiment, see which you prefer.
      Good luck!!

I prefer wax - never had any issues with anything being sticky maybe its the stuff I apply first before the wax?

Oh if I get a cue first I take off the crap off it so get the cue I fine sand down in fine grades from fine down to zero grade then I use this shellac stuff - like a grain filler they use on furniture and guitars - messy but worth it -you can use just this as a finish in its own right but I go a little further - so I apply it once leave it to dry for an hour and a half or so then wire wool zero grade it then apply another coat same again leave an hour and a half then I wire wool it again then buff then I apply the finishing wax - I then leave that 15 mins then buff and buff until I blow the house down - and bingo smooth as a baby's arse but smells much better.

Depends on the finish you want - There are a few cue makers who sell stuff for cues I like a little feedback from the bridge hand - so do it myself but if you like the oil finish for the best smoothest finish I recommend using the Dave Coutts cue oil - its ace.

                I would say yes tofu.
I oil my cue and then wax and buff vigorously. I get a great finish on my cue this way, if u like the really smooth finish on a cue.
I do for a few friends as well.
The best finish I have felt on a cue is byu Mike Wooldridge. I dont know how he gets it so good, i guess its a electric buffing machine of sorts, its excellent however he does it.

I had this for my pool cue. Not sure is it suitable for ash or not. What you guys think? Sure works well with my pool cue.

If buff hard isnt sticky, i use ADR wax, leaves really smooth finish after two coats and a hell of a lot of buffing.
What oil do you use Dave??

Heat from your hands leads wax to become sticky in my experience mate. I use either a mix of linseed and tung oil or danish oil

There is an old saying in wood finishing. Shellac sticks to everything and everything sticks to shellac.
