Thanks for the link, very interesting read so far

Guys, when a ferrule size is given, how is that number worked out, how do I go about measuring my current old cue to check the size I've been using in the past? Thanks

You'll need some digital calipers to get an exact measurement. They can also be used to measure butt width and taper down the shaft.

If you have an accurate tape, you could wrap it around the top of the ferrule, then divide the this mm circumference by 3.14 on your phone calculator to get the diameter of the ferrule. But calipers are easier and more accurate.

          Thanks

So in the absence of the calipers I should wrap a bit of string around the ferrule and then divide the length by 3.14?

You can measure directly across the top of the ferrule, the next time you replace a tip.....

Ah good point, I could remove the tip and measure, it'll give me the chance to practice re-tipping as well, thanks

The calipers are dirt cheap on eBay DM, but most of the cues I have bought dont have the tip sizes advertised anyway lol, they're always smaller than advertised.
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

Often true. there's a world of difference between having a pair of calipers, and being able to use them! I think I got mine from Lidl, or some such....for relatively peanuts.

Is 10mm too much for a snooker cue?

Narrowed down my choices to 5 cues & one of them is a 10mm ferrule, its also the most expensive so I don't want to make a big mistake?

                    • I think 10mm performs best on a good felt, it's not too much though as I'm sure lots of pros and decent players use the above size tip.

                        • So am I right in thinking that the larger the tip the easier it is to get a straight shot for example but not as easy to apply spin, side etc and the reverse for smaller tips?

                          • Yes but I wouldn't over think it if I was you mate. 9.5mm or 10mm won't make the difference in you becoming a good player, only time at the table and playing the same shot over and over and over and over again will do that.

                            • What is your preferred spec on the cue you use now? Measure it then look for a cue that fits that spec.

                              • no you can spin the white the same, but you may find more consistency on long shots when center ball stiking is crucial
