Just for my own understanding though. If you clean everything, what's changed to make it now out of alignment?

Not questioning your feedback, just interested that's all (again, thanks for the feedback).....
When you take the joint out the hole becomes slightly larger and will fit less well when you put it back together and will have a very slight amount of play and not easy to get it exactly as it was especially as you are doing it freehand.

I bought a 2nd hand 3/4 cue from a British cue maker, which had the shaft/ebony fingers turned about 10° past the flat on the butt.

When a friend took the joint out, he found the hole for the joint was way bigger than the joint itself. Just lots of glue holding it together.

He had to drill it a bit more , then dowel it before drilling a new hole for a good joint fit.

As it as 2nd hand, can't tell if the cue maker, or a botch merchant later on, had done the jointwork like that. .

Sorry, should read "I bought a 2nd hand cue BY a British cue maker", but when I go to edit the post, the message box is blank. .

Some really good answers guys so I appreciate that.

If you don't ask you don't get so at least I have a better understanding.

A lot of roads with cue making seem to lead to a lathe..........

if its an older parris the joint might not be a screw in one so, that way it can be lined up much easier.

That certainly puts a different stance on it.

You didn't just take the joint out to help the thread did you..........what a star.

I'll bet there's been enough pics taken of cue joints on the forum to identify all cues and joints over the years; probably ferrules and extensions too......

Some good advice here - although it has put me off doing this procedure myself.I have a butt jointed cue;I want to remove the joint from the shaft & replace it with another joint which I have. How much would this cost & can anyone recommend someone to do it? I live in Crewe in Cheshire.

You need a male joint the same not attached to minibutt, screw joint in, warm the joint, heat induction causes glue to melt then just unscrew.

Must admit I was a bit scared to attempt this myself.Rang Tony Wilshaw of Stoke - no answer then number unobtainable.Tried B & W Snooker of Brierley Hill who said they would ring back but didn't.Thought I might as well try it myself so heated the joint using cigarette lighters then unscrewed the joint using mole-grips.Thanks for the advice.Definitely saved me a few quid.
