  • Ebony - Anyone else bored of it or is it just me?

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some opinions and conducting some market research at the same time.

Now that I'm back building cues I'm going through my stock of AAA jet black Ebony and while this is what the industry covets I personally find it quite boring. I much prefer a nice piece of figured Rosewood or African Blackwood myself. I think if you're going to have a custom cue made then it'd make sense to have as unique of a cue as possible. All this black ebony just looks a little fake to me now that there are even cheap cues using it (and bodging over the cracks).

    so...

Q: Do you all still want to see jet black ebony in your cues or would you prefer to see more figured yet still very dark woods?

    All opinions count!

I love the classic look real ebony. Hard to get the good stuff now, so many cues out there using that ebonix or dyed ebony to make it look blacker than it is and its a joke.

So yep Jet black ebony here I am afraid is still the dogs.

If I was being fancy then secondary I would say a nice ty burr or snakewood. Thing is with some woods like cocobolo which I like is that they dull and fade over time so handling something over time on the butt it is probably much better just in black.

Bit like TV's when flat screens first came out they were all black- Then the in thing was silver, how long did that fad last, not long, then back to good old black. Can't beat a bit of 'true' black ebony! My MW has a real deep black ebony with 4 secondary Rosewood splices, looks the nuts, lost count the amount of people who have asked to buy it from me

Can't beat a nice bit of ebony. anything else done in 'full butt' just looks cheap and or tacky in comparison imo...
