Ebony is pretty much the go to wood because of the weight it adds and the fact it contrasts differently against different shaft woods. With ebony on maple the "fingers" stand out a good bit more because of the grain being so subtle. Plus it works well in conjunction with different types of woods or veneers making them stand out much more than they would with a rosewood butt or something similar

Close straight grain ash shaft, with hand spliced black ebony, followed by a single maple veneer, topped of with a single front splice of burr walnut. What a combination, it just wouldn't be right without the ebony.......

Always jet black ebony as cue butt for me. I love highly figured woods so most burl as splices would be good. Some of my favourite woods would be amboyna, camphor burl, cocobolo, tulip, masur... they're all very nice. I think a plain jet black ebony as cue butt is classy too. The finish on the wood is important, it should be smooth and at the same time bring out the wood pattern.

Jet black ebony for me too - just looks soooo right.
Also other great looking woods are macassar and a nice dark burl.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Keep it coming.

Interesting to see the early results. I honestly thought it would be much more weighted in favor of Ebony than it is.

Exile, if you can design some cool non-Traditional non-Ebony butt, I'm sure you can start a viral trend for adventurous cues enthusiast (like myself )
