Ebony is pretty much the go to wood because of the weight it adds and the fact it contrasts differently against different shaft woods. With ebony on maple the "fingers" stand out a good bit more because of the grain being so subtle. Plus it works well in conjunction with different types of woods or veneers making them stand out much more than they would with a rosewood butt or something similar

Ebony - Anyone else bored of it or is it just me?

Always jet black ebony as cue butt for me. I love highly figured woods so most burl as splices would be good. Some of my favourite woods would be amboyna, camphor burl, cocobolo, tulip, masur... they're all very nice. I think a plain jet black ebony as cue butt is classy too. The finish on the wood is important, it should be smooth and at the same time bring out the wood pattern. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back. GET MAD!!
