  • Need a new cue

Hi, I'm new here. I've been playing pool for a while now and snooker for just as long. I've changed 2 cues, but I only bought 1. The first one was a Powerglide MIDAS, Rex Williams signature on it (not a real one of course) and that was my brother's cue, he stopped playing for awhile and then when I picked it up all of a sudden he couldn't handle me talking about the table and he picked it back up which was great because I had someone to play with regularly but it wasn't all good because I needed a cue. So i bought a crappy Powerglide, 17 0z, 57inch and 9.5mm tip. All wrong for my game but it was a stick when a cue was needed so I didn't complain. Now that I'm playing Pool at a competitive level all the older guys in my team say I need a cue that is just right for me. I will cut to the chase:
I'm looking at Phoenix Cues and Maximus Cues, I dropped Master Cues because I heard Maximus and Phoenix are a step above. Could you please give me an opinion and if you have one of these cues send me a photo of it.
P.S. my main problem with my current cue is the shaft is too thick, I like a thin shaft that slides through my fat fingers.
Tip size 9.25 (so I can play both Snooker and English Pool)
    Length: 56 inches
Butt diameter: Thinner rather than thicker
Most importantly a thinner taper than the stuff you buy off the rack.

I don't know were you are but if in north somewhere my advice is have a drive to either craftsman in Kippax or Green Baize and try a few out. They have hundreds of cues so you have more chance to find one with the taper and specs and feel you like.

Both these venues have full size tables where you can try out the cues. Possibly if you want a particular cue but want a thinner taper that could be done too.

Unfortunately I'm in Australia where everything is overpriced so I have to order online, that being said it shouldn't be too hard to get a better cue than a $100 Powerglide. Thanks for your response.

Ha ha. these are ty cues would have thought easier to go direct must be a supplier is oz somewhere.

Good choice anyway - both decent cues I think if you get a good one - just thinking about your import duties might bump the price up buying from here in UK - if you buy one might be better looking closer to home - so a quick search for you found a couple of sites

Take care and good luck ...

Oh yeah TSF has a number of cue collectors and players on here - some from oz - they might be a good bet to find a good cue.

A few makers can make a decent cue but some of the more popular ones have a really long waiting time - years not months

Try Jim Evans, he tends to favour a slim taper from the few I've had of his. With the specs your looking at might be worth asking if he's got an old cue he could rework, might save you a few quid with the price of wood these days?
No one is listening until you make a mistake!
