I prefer 19oz. My understand is heavier cue will be more steady for cueing, less swing action but more power transfered to the cue ball.

Trevs1, what's your answer, please advise the right way to determine.

About 18 oz and I wouldn't change it. It depends on the cue in each case though.
Shaft shape for example has an effect. If I'd go for one with a shaft that's more lathy I'd decrease the weight.

Mine is 20oz...I really like it so far but if I have to change it, I'll go for a lighter one obviously lol, somewhere around 19. Can't really go higher than 20 anyway.

          My cue weighs 18,7oz.

If I wanted to change I would try a slightly lighter cue. Possibly 17,5 - 18

A maybe weird theory I have. Does a heavier cue make the arm more likely to twitch on powerstrokes?, as in the weight of the cue give more resistance and thus more likely that the muscles in the arm tighten up (twitch).

....or should I just shut up and practice more.

Well, you play differently with an 18oz and a 20oz cue. You have 60gr difference, it's not negligible. So your cue action will be slightly different. Not as sharp as with a lighter cue, due to the increased inertia. But it doesn't mean you'll twitch your arm.

Trevs1 has just increased the weight in my cue a little from 16.25-16.75oz.
Small change does make a little bit of difference!

I started out 40+ years ago playing with a 16oz cue. I remember chatting to Alex Higgins back in the mid 1970s about cue weights and he wanted to experiment with cues up to 20oz in weight.

In recent years I have tried playing with cues from 18oz to 21oz in weight because I mistakenly thought that the heavier the cue the more power that i would get out of it!!

It was explained to me recently that its the exact opposite and a lighter cue will let me get more cue control and power so my present cue is 17.85oz and I would even go lighter to 17.5oz. I think the balance is also very important.

It seems that a lot of the top pros use cues in the 17-18oz range and John Higgins even uses a cue that is below 16oz!!

Trevs 1.......you started this debate, what is your view of modern day cue weights?

Hendrys cue is 17.5oz........very slim butt, only 26mm, and the cue is maple and 57.5in long with a 9.25mm tip......

                          Up to the individual

My cue is 18 3/4oz which is fine on most tables, but I struggle if I play on a table that has not been ironed and therefore slow.
If you have a well maintained table you can play with a lighter cue as you dont have to put so much effort into the white ball.
The Pro's today have it made they practice on fast tables then play under television lights with under table heating,I would love to see some of them playing with no heating and using over 30oz cloth, we would not see so many big breaks as the balls would not break up so easily, and the game could become more enjoyable to watch again.

My cue is 19 oz natural weight No added weight

However what's important for me is the balance point at 17 inches.

                            The distribution is important
