  • Need cue advice

    Hi guys,
I have been regularly playing Snooker for the past couple of months. However, I do not own my own cue yet and am looking to buy one instead of playing with a different one every time I play at the club. Could anyone recommend a cue or a couple of cues to me? I am willing to spend up to around £150 as I want a decent one that will last me a while.
    Thanks,
    Adam Reade

To be blunt if you don't have any view on length tip size weight balance point, you'd be better off spending £30 on a cue than spending £150. Visit a shop, smash some balls, but whatever you feel like you play best with... Don't look at the price!

PB is right, if you don't know what suits you, pointless shelling out £150. If your playing with rack cues at the moment pick the one you play best with and measure the length the tip size and if you can the weight, balance point is less important if you haven't had a cue of your own before. If your playing with friends try their cues and ask what specs they are.
Your best bet is to visit a shop with a table you can have a knock on and see what suits you, if you tell us where your based we can point you in the right direction, unfortunately there few and far between these days though.
If you really don't have a clue and you just want the best cue for your money to build your game around, ADR has some plain ebony cues at the moment with pretty standard specs which are excellent value at under £150 I'm sure you could twist his arm to do a complet package with mini butt and case for around £150 plus delivery?

Thanks for your advice guys, I think I like 9-9.5mm tips, under 18oz weight (probably about 17.5oz but up to 18 is ok) and a length of 58.25"

Most cues come in it at 58" but that's the measurement to the ferrule not the tip, so with a decent layered tip on will be around 58.25", have a look at the cues ADR has on eBay

You might find a better deal on a second hand cue, should be able to find quite a few in those specs, but new cue wise £150 doesn't get you much from any of the names you're probably familiar with, the mid range peradon, mastercue, omen etc usually have a terrible finish and don't hold there value.
I'm sure a few on here will have something that tickles your fancy, you'll need to get your page count up then you can send and receive PM'S.

Are Brittania cues any good? They are the cues at my local club and they seem to have some decent ones online but I'm not that educated when it comes to brands. They seem to be reasonably priced. Also, does jointing make any difference to how a cue plays? As I have heard although they are more convenient they do not play as well, don't know how much truth there is in that though

This is a long term debate. personally I am not keen on jointed cues.

Can't say I have any experience of them, ADR used to stock them and reckoned the steel ones were excellent, steel ferrule and joints.
1 piece vs 3/4, a 1 piece will always feel and play better as its one continuous piece of wood giving you a nice solid hit, but once you've tried squeezing into the back of a team mates car with 4 blokes with 1 piece cases the novelty soon wears off! A decent 3/4 cue won't play that much differently in that price bracket, so just personal preference really.
