Hi, I was wondering if anyone has a guide to refinishing a cue including grain filling.

All the ones I have followed links to seem to be broken and not working.

Thats great! One question though do you sand and grain fill the black of the shaft too?

I prefer fine wire wool on the butt. As for grain filler, I've never seen the need to use it on ebony.

I assume its ash as its part of the shaft not the butt.

The black stuff is Ebony, sand it, collect the black dust from it and rub it into the grain with oil as the link say's.

Oh right thanks, I assumed as it was part of the shaft it was ash and painted or something.

I thought only the butt was ebony with other woods spliced.

That makes sense now.

On the shaft where my chin sits it drags at the hits and you can feel the ridges in the grain, quite deep.

Can they be filled to reduce the drag?

Is it a matter of just fill, sand and oil?

I just read this and Mike says to avoid raw linseed oil and opt for boiled is this the general consensus?

Cheers Fred, I had some raw linseed oil and had given it to my friend who wanted to redo his cue ,luckily he hadn't started it yet so I told him to read Mikes web site.

Raw linseed oil never dries, always use boiled, better still use tung oil.

i use clear linseed oil, it sinks in, drys, buffs and mixes really well

Thanks all, I bought the linseed but never used it,thought it would darken the shaft to much, glad I didn't now. I told the lad Mike said Danish or Tung oil, I had never heard of clear linseed, is that OK to use neat so to speak or is it mixed with other stuff? Is Danish and Tung used neat and by themselves or mixed?

I use Lemon oil, mainly because I have some and it smells nice, popular with guitar builders.

Sorry re-reading the thread its not the ebony that I want to fill, I just used that picture to show the grain.

This is the bit that is catching my chin.

It doesn't pull the hairs out but does drag at them.
