An oak shafted cue I've nearly finished, bit of an experiment to be honest, thought I'd try some different things all at once so if it turned out crap I'd need only junk one.
Used some ash offcuts for the butt as I didn't want to waste any expensive hardwood and as the offcuts were different lengths I offset the splices, two long opposite each other and two short opposite each other, I think it looks OK and something that I will replicate in the future.

Will give it a beeswax polish finish this week, stick a tip on and have a game next weekend, let you all know how it plays.

Specs are
one piece oak shaft 60 & 1/2 inches long, 28.5mm diameter butt, 10mm tip with stainless steel ferrule, 15.2 oz's, 21 inch BP, ash butt with burnt oak veneers.

Well I couldn't wait and took it down the club last night and played with it in its unfinished state. Didn't like it really, far too light and to thin a butt for me. Had a new elk on it, which I liked and to be honest the fact that it's oak didn't make a difference to any responsiveness I got or felt was lacking. What was lacking was weight and something substantial to hold. My mate had a few shots with it but it was too long and too thin a butt for him. I think it's more suited to english 8 ball than snooker but no doubt it will suit someone.
I have three other oak shafts and will try another but give it a 30mm butt and taper to suit and weight it to about 18oz's.

Maybe try as a break cue for uk pool, they seem to be getting popular and they are light weights.

I said I didn't like it, not that it didn't play well, made a couple of thirty breaks with it, beat my mate a few frames, besides this is your thread cannonball, and don't insult my intelligence by stating otherwise, we all know your MO by now.
When you're experimenting making cues with different timbers, balance points, ferrules etc then you can pipe up, until then keep your head down, my finger is hovering over the report button right now

No idea who you are on about. And don't threaten me, that's quite silly, though you are obviously the reporting kind. And point out what I said that is against the house rules please.

But wisdom would suggest that players like cues that are 17-19oz for very good reasons no? So why make a cue at 15oz, that's too light for almost anyone these day. Maybe Riley made some of those back in the day but no-one plays with cues that light anymore. But if you wish to continue to make cues that light, please, that's your perogative. Anyone with half a snooker brain could have told you a 60" cue at 15oz cue with a 21" BP would not play well!

I can't say the splicing was correct either, looks off to me.

If you can't take gentle criticism, don't put up pictures and descriptions. It's a forum afterall, unless you don't believe in honest opinions and free speech?

Some people come on pop up and just say negative or nasty comments and never anything positive and most members don't contribute anything at all to any debate.

Yet someone who loves contributing and talking about wood cues and snooker and sharing his honest opinions gets slated and threatened with a ban. You never going to stop the guy coming back again and again even if you ban him - so why not just let him be?

Let people have their say - right or Wrong - it's a forum. If you jump all over everyone it puts people off posting on here also as they might not understand what you are complaining about and it just looks like gang mentality to them.

In fairness to Steve though big splash he was just having a mess about as he said in the earlier post - he is a new cue maker and he is allowed to do what he wants too. If he wants to make a big arse oak cue that's up to him.

I am interested to see more of his work properly and I hope you praise the good stuff he will no doubt make just as eagerly as you have slated this little experiment.

I have not been short in my admiration of the likes of TP and Stamford, not forgetting Glover, CJ, AT, etc. J6 also makes great cues. I've praised many cue makers. But as for hexagon waggon wheels; that's up to cue makers. I won't even go into the many reasons why 17-18oz is ideal but that lesson (from pro player experience) has been known for about half a century now.

John Spencer used a 15 oz cue, three time world champion, learned the game with the old heavier crystalate balls in the 50's and 60's.
So how come you didn't know that despite the many reasons to the contrary ? Half a snooker brain, yeah right.

BTW said cue has been sold locally to someone who likes it, so not a waste of my time and many lessons learned.
