  • Slight nick in shaft of cue

    Hi,
I noticed today that there is a slight cut in the shaft of my cue and a small piece of wood has raised out. It's hard to explain but it's annoying because it runs over my bridge hand. How should I go about repairing this? Would it be safer to go to a proper cue repairer? Thanks, James

You've got a few choices. You could fill it with Superglue gel, wood filler (the poly type activated by peroxide) or put in something like epoxy. Then needle file it afterwards making sure you don't file the wood. I've done this to a few cues and the results are fine and although you can see the fill, you can't feel it cueing. All these fills go shiny after time but if it's small, it's no bother.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately it doesn't really come up in a pic. I think I'll take it to b and w billiards in Birmingham, rather than try to fix it myself.

It sounds like a small piece has chipped out J. What would you do for that? I've been thinking some ash dust and glue of some sort.

iv replaced bits in the shafted, though finding and shaping the right bit takes the time, and id always do it with wood clue.

Even a tiny piece can have grain and needs matching don't it? Amazing really.

not easy/clumsy to take a chunk out of a cue. bad management or really unlucky if it happens

what i have done in the past is apply superglue to dent and quickly sand with very fine wet and dry paper this will produce very fine sawdust which will stick to the glue and act like a filler seen a couple of interesting american videos one where a guy apply's steam from a steam cleaner type thingy which i think he said softens the fibres and causes them to raise back up and a video where they rubbed a glass bottle against the wood which somehow removed the dent the american vids were working with maple shafts so might not work so well with ash try a bit of youtube surfing it's amazing whats on there

Really deep ones though might need some filling or other such as superglue. It's not difficult at all. Don't used the bottle idea though that just flattens the edges of a dent and leaves it a bit smoother but still there.

No charge btw but I might say bring a bottle of milk round if I'm out of it
I know there are two B&Ws in Midlands, if you mean the one based in Cradley Heath it has closed for business now. Saw it on their Facebook page.

Yeah, those are the two that I meant but b&w billiards have closed, was a notice on their Facebook page saying this and for anyone having a cue there for repairs to contact and pick them up.

Does anyone know why such a thriving business has suddenly closed it's doors, looks a bit of a shame.

A guy I've started playing with at my local snooker club said that he can fix it which is kind of him. He said he would apply lacquer on the dent with a brush and then sand over. Does that sound ok? He's a nice guy and seemed to know what he's talking about but I just wanted to check.
