i play uk 8 ball with a cue i thinned down to 5/16" or 7.93mm in the new money i have been using this size for years but am always looking for things to improve my chances of winning which is why i switched to kamui black tips i look at youtube trying to keep in touch with technical inovations and feel like it's time to try carbon fibre as a ferrule material there are numerous sellers of carbom fibre tube in 8mm the reason i want to try this is i found by what experts on the internet say this minimises deflection or squirt when applying extreme spin to the cue ball and feel anything which helps minimize your chances of missing a pot has got to be worth trying i wonder has anyone tried this or am i just mad.

Stick to what you're used to, there are no internet experts, just salesmen, different opinions and gullible idiots, as this site clearly proves.

Just get used to the cue you have.

I believe that MW's BlackSpin has a size it will go down to and not below, used to be noted on the website somewhere, due to the physical size of the spur that goes down the shaft and a minimum amount of wood required around this spur. I don't think it will go down to 8mm.
I don't think MW's BlackSpin ferrule is carbon-fibre, precise compound not published
as has been said, I don't think a 8mm will produce much deflection - most probably you will see more unwanted side than deflection, learn to cue straighter
(ps I play with a 8.2mm with brass ferrule and learnt to deliver the cue straighter )
Just checked the website, and MW will got to 8mm but not below for BlackSpin.Up the TSF! :snooker:

I play with a similar size tip, around 7.6-7.7, and I too have thought about different tips/ferrules to improve my game, what I ended up doing was leaving it as it is, watch the pros, they never seem to play a difficult shot because their cue ball control and their planning of the clearance is very good, very rarely do you see extreme spin being used.
I watch Tom Cousins play from time to time as he works at my local club, saying that were playing his team first match in the winter league, they make every dish look so simple

Carbon fibre can be quite brittle . I have a cue with a 7.75 mm short brass ferrule on that I use when I am not hitting centre ball . A tip that small usually sets me back up properly and I switch back to my preferred playing spec 0f 8.75 - 9 mm . Leave your cue alone and if you must try carbon , do so with a cue that is NOT your playing cue. Short brass " pigeon ring " style ferrules will be better for you than carbon fibre any day of the week and make it easier to change tips as well , with carbon changing tips isnt so easy.

IME of plastic ferrules stateside, I found the gain from less throw was balanced by a trade-off of power. IME brass is punchier behind the tip and the force tranmits to the ball more effectively. There's definitely a difference in feel and plastic wins there. I do like plastic, it's closer to no ferrule as a shot, given plastic is closer in density to wood than brass.Last edited by Big Splash!; 26 August 2016, 09:02 PM.
