  • Time for a new cue, opinions required

    Evening all.

I primarily play 8 ball pool (uk) but often hit the snooker table in order to practise more. I've been playing a few years now and I'm pretty decent at both. This Christmas I've decided to get a new cue. The budget is 100-150 pounds.
I've seen woods, dunns, master pop up.

My question is that with the budget I have which cue maker would you go with? Doesn't have to be in that list.

    Thanks.

My first decent cue was from welshpooltrading. Lasted me well and was a nice hit ( for me ).

Your best bet however is to try before you buy. Doesn't matter what the label says, it's what feels right that counts.

You may find you prefer a cue with different specs for snooker. After trying cues at Greenbaize I've got an 18oz cue with a 9.7mm tip for pool and a thinner lighter cue for pool.

If you mainly play pool go sonewhere you can try cues on a decent 7ft x 4ft table.

You may be able to get away with one cue for both sports and a lot do (especially if you prefer a lighter cue for snooker) but it's something to consider.

That's kind of my problem. I'm in mid wales, there's nothing around here cue maker wise. I've always just used your average Riley cue

The cue maker Johnathan Lonergan is based near Swansea. Perhaps you could contact him. You would need a good idea of the right specs first though if you're ordering a cue. What do you play with at the moment, what kind of weight?

                9.5mm tip, believe it's a 20oz.

I like the look of one of the woods cues but it looks lacquered which is putting me off

If you're happy with a 9.5mm tip for pool then stick to that, plus it will give you a lot of options when looking for a cue. 20oz is very heavy though, particularly for English 8 ball pool.

At the end of the day it's all subjective, for a cue that's good for uk 8 ball and snooker I'd say go lighter, say 17.5oz, but everyone is different and prefers different weights.

20 has always felt heavy to be fair. A friend has an 18oz and it feels great. Haven't bothered until now but I've decided I really want to improve my game after having a few bad seasons.
So a 9.5mm 17.5oz cue I feel would be great. Now to decide on the make.

                        Richy Macdonald.

he's on here as 'The Doctor'... Had a few cues off him for pool players in my area and they all hit really well.

For that money, it would have to be Master Cue for me. Maybe O'min if you can get a Thai one as well. But I'd rather spend some time on ebay and get a GBL (also Thai). For £150 you could probably get a cue that's nearer 250-300 new and it will be a great cue.
