Much better grip feeling.
The cue I had made about 30 years ago doesn't have one or the one I made myself.
Plus you get more even wear on the tip, i feel..For that one you've always wanted...

I use a maple cue, yes it can make a difference that way but still prefer a round butt, even on ash.For that one you've always wanted...

To suggest a flat is needed for that is absurd

I think you might have a problem with your cue action and not the cue!! Mr Homer...
Just want to ask.... Do you know the rest the flat is there in the first place?Last edited by Ninja.cues; 16 March 2017, 01:37 AM.For that one you've always wanted...

Like you do with a rest.
If you look at an old billard cue, the butt is cut at an angle and the flat use to be shorter so it was easier to do.
At some point, someone got the idea to turn the cue around and use both hands.
This is also why you got leather on the butt.... So it was hitting the ivory balls.
Then the leather was put on the smaller end.
Hope this is clear...For that one you've always wanted...

Personally I use the flat as it keeps my cue and the grain in the same place for every shot.
Sometimes I use a specific part of the grain to line tough shots up (sometimes).
If the shaft ever bows a little, at least it will be in the same place all the time so the brain can make allowances. If Hendry or Reardon didn't put their cues in the same position each time by using the flat then the bow might have been a problem to deal with.

For billiards the mace was turned around and the thin end was used to strike the cue ball for greater accuracy, the flat stayed on billiards cues purely for traditions' sake.
Personally I couldn't play without a flat as when I use the rest the flat is against my thumb and a round butt cue would be too big to fit between my fingers, even my mini butt has a flat for this reason and it lines up with the flat on my cue so everything looks and feels the same when using it.
