I have a wooldridge cue with an 8mm tip which i use nearly every day to play uk pool, the shaft is quite whippy and not very stiff at all, is there anything i can do to stifen it up i.e treat it with an oil etc to make it a bit stiffer?

Im thinking about getting mike to make me a new shaft for it, also 8mm, the taper and tip size will be a factor in the whippiness, would i be able to get another shaft same spec but stiffer of is it because the wood on my cue is so thin?

    Hi Craig,

The main factor in the stiffness of any shaft is the rigidity of the timber used.

Having said that, the taper and weight of the cue also plays a major part in determining stiffness.

If two cues were built using the same ash for the shafts but to different specs, you might find the following:

    Cue A)
With a slim shaft and a bigger ferrule size and with more weight towards the butt end will give a whippier shaft.

    Cue B)
With a standard shaped taper, with a smaller ferrule size and less weight will be more rigid.

This example is just a guide, but, hopefully it gives you some idea of what causes more spring throughout a shaft in any given cue.

By the way, I'll try to get some pictures done for you tomorrow.
