  • Cue Alterations - Lengthening/Shortening

I was speaking to a cue maker who I will keep private but they are without doubt mentioned frequently being among the "best".

I hardly post now but those of you who remember will know I play with a 55 inch cue.

I enquired about having a cue made from scratch to specification and was advised that this cue maker no longer does custom orders and only makes for overseas distributors.

Though this is the case, they did have 4 cues available for me to try if I wanted to buy from their stock though the range of these cues were from 57-58 inches.

I mentioned that these cues would be unsuitable and he mentioned having the cue cut down for me to which I declined.

Whilst I'm by no means a cue-maker/expert but the general consensus was that if a cue had been finished to a certain length, then it shouldn't be altered and messed around with.

The cue-maker also said to me that it wouldn't make any difference at all as if he was to make me a cue from scratch, he would do the exact same thing and cut a cue down.

I wanted to know if any of you were after a cue, would you have it lengthened/shortened or would you buy from scratch?

    Thanks,
    Nicholas

A big difference in shortening by removing a bit from the top than adding length on the butt which will drastically alter the cue.

I too use a 55" cue. Never had a problem having a cue shortened. Reg Wright Cues, did a brilliant job & added a SD joint. Much more cost effective than going bespoke.

He has cues in stock but for some reason never lists them on the website, i remember the one time where he had cues listed and they all sold out in a few hours. Think about 99% of what he makes ends up in Asia.

yeah, I speak to him every so often, I took my cue from Raymond Cohen over to him to do some work and he was sharing some of his experiences regarding his time in cue making. He did say an overwhelming majority of his cues just goes to Asia and only he had a couple cues in stock for me to look at but these are only on appointment basis.

I know he had an incident similar to craftsman cues which is why he doesn't put anything out on display and I suspect it may have had an impact on his advertising cues on his website.

yeah a couple years ago when i went to see him his workshop was empty. literally nothing on display no cases, cues. even in his little cabinet no accessories.

i asked him why he doesn't display anything. he mentioned a couple shady fellas came in. i wouldn't 100% put my money on it that stuff got stolen because he only mentioned it briefly but from then on, he's become more vigilante.

and it wouldn't surprise me if its made him more sceptical in taking custom orders.

Tony Glover had some cues stolen a couple of years ago as well. Robert Osborne only seems to do "standard" spec cues now, supposedly as result of people going over the top with cue requirements.

Stamford cues do great work. Highly recommended.
