Playability no. appearance yes. all you pay for is splicing and woods.

go from special to paragon to ultimate you pay for a difference in grain or a lack of grain if you are a maple user.

Nope, the higher ranges are all to do with additional splicing and veneers, and in the case of made to measure a shaft with more even and straight grain spacing. There's absolutely nothing to suggest an Ultimate will play better than a classic, an ambassador or any of the other cues in the range. The reason they go up in price is as you add more splices and veneers the more work is added to building the cue, more materials are used and the cost goes up. As for made to measure they just use shafts with more even grain and darker ebony.

The ultimate may use the blackest ebony and have a shaft that's aesthetically pleasing, but that doesn't mean its somehow going to be a better playing cue.

I play against a guy each Sunday who has an Ultimate who regularly picks my classic up by mistake and carries on for a few shots before I tell him.

He keeps telling me they are so much better but can't quite tell me why. It certainly doesn't play any different than this particular classic.

Had one years ago and like an idiot I sold it. Paid £240 for it at the Crucible in 2003. My game was never the same again. Very good cue.

It's all personal, that's the beauty of it.

If a more expensive cue potted more balls we'd all have one! (or three)

I've been tempted to take a broomstick, put a tip on it and take it down the club and have a few games to see how it goes.

I might have to shave a few pieces off the end but it would be interesting to play one of the guys in the club (maybe even leave the brush on the end!).

Legend has it the Brush Shaft was made from Air Dried Angel Ash over a period of the last 40 years
