Anyone using these? how do they play?

i've just picked one up from ebay as a do'er up'er and it looks a great cue, just some chips to the lacquer which i'll be sanding off, then a grain filler and oil, it may be a keeper if it plays as well as it looks!

i'll put some before, during and after pics up if i get chance.

I made a bid on the same cue, seemed perfect to strip, repair and turnover. I'm experimenting with oil finishing at the moment, finding some inner peace re-finishing cues! Also enjoying experimenting with different oils/blends.

Not much said about the Niche cues on here but from what I've seen of them the splice work is always good and even. The shellac/lacquer butt finish seems common on them all which I'm not keen on but removing that is all part of the fun.

They are great cues but like a lot of thai makers they plaster everything in thick varnish.

just curious on a few things - why do they do this and whats the best way to take this off and refinish them - is it safe to do so or will this fade the wood colour?

climate I guess - the biggest issue is that the stuff they use is toxic so you have to have masks etc to remove it

I recently acquired a niche non varnished cue and it is fantastic in my opinion, like most Thai cues
I went into a chemist and asked for a deodorant, the assistant said "ball, stick or aerosol", "No, I want it for under my arms!" was my reply.

ha cheers, i'll get a mask then.

It does seem to be laid on quite thick, but it stops at the shaft so not too much to do really. i'll prpbaly oil and wax the butt.

                Splices are nice and even.

Specs are 57.25/9.5/18.1 so about right for me and very good considering there was no info in the add and he didnt reply to my questions.

I messaged Niche on facebook and they were very helpful indeed.

Mask and plenty of sand paper will be purchased today!

ok so i attacked the cue over the weekend. Not a perfect job as i didnt have much time but certainly much better than it was.

First some pics of the chips in the lacquer

Here you can see how far the varnish goes, where the shaft changes to a darker colour.

I started with 320 paper to remove the bulk of the lacquer and worked all the way up to 2000 went from 800 to 2000 on the shaft then a few coats of linseed oil and a coat of wax on the butt.

                      Half way through

                      Finished!...

Currently using Niche laminated shaft cue and loves it. After trying other cue specs and since their price is reasonable, I decided to purchase another laminated cue with slight changes to my current cue specs. Now waiting patiently for my new toy
