  • Buying a new cue on line..... Be very careful!!

I am repairing a cue for someone that tightened his 3 week old cue and it split on round the to joint!

It has been ebonised (painted black), talking to him, I found out that he had paid over £350 for the cue, case and mini butt.....
It split because it was something like walnut under the black, which is very soft..

I will try to find out which site it was... Name and shame..

I was just thinking that myself.

Sounds very expensive so would be interested if he did go back to them.

I've done the same with a 60" maple 3/4 bought off ebay that didn't join straight and had a butt painted black. On removing the paint the wood underneath turned out to be very attractive but there was a glue line in the shaft splices and a repaired crack on the joint in the butt, so I guess that's why it had been painted.
I took three inches off the cue when removing and refitting the joint and retapering the shaft, and although the glue line and crack are now visible it ain't going anywhere. It has a lovely maple shaft, mini butt and solid wood extension and only cost £25 and plays great, who says you have to spend hundreds.

That is a really nice rosewood butt and you don't have to spend hundreds but when you do... Do think you should get what you pay for...

britannia cues vary in quality from the really terrible to the really stunning. Usually if you pay £350 for one it will be stunning.
