I'm a bit confused as to why not the Shaft if for the Butt. (Is snooker the most innuendo thing on the planet?) -- typed while you were typing 2nd reply.

I assume that you prefer that one as it has the cleaning bit?

Personally I use wax for the butt as it shines up nice and I can keep buffing it after each session and stays clean.

I wouldn't put it on the shaft as I've found it doesn't glide as well as oil through the fingers when applied to a shaft (personal opinion).

With the shaft I am not after a shine, I want it smooth; with the butt I use the wax as more after the shine.

If finishing a shaft, oil and wax can end up in a mess!

I always clean my ferrule with 0000 fine steel wool and protect the shaft and tip with masking tape.

My old cue, I did the but with oil first but found it wouldn't keep the shine, so ended up lacquering it as I had some from a job sitting around..
Found it also really brought the colour out in in the butt..

And for Butt only? I'm going wax with my cue (Master) as I have struggled with the finish. The shaft is fine with the Craftmans Cues Finishing Wax.

I find that it leaves a nice protective layer on the ferrule that protects from oxidizing, with a brilliant shine that lasts.

My suggestion is not to wax very often. Once every six months. I have used the same tin almost 7 years and done hundreds of cues with it.

Never heard of anyone waxing metal so will give that a go, interesting though!

I'm actually a car Detailer and tried Swissvax crystal rock wax on the butt today but it hasn't increased it much more than it did with just oil.

That's an expensive wax by the way, around £900

Toothpaste mixed with some oil and rub the cue until it goes dry. You should see the cue shine as you do this.
Can also use a metal Polish or rubbing compound mixed with oil.
Takes a bit of elbow grease but that's how I do it.
On tru oil, it can take a while to dry especially on certain woods like cocobolo.
I'd try other methods.

Coincidentally I bought some Shoe Polish the other day, and guess what: yep it has "Added Carnauba", so metal, wood and leather.....
