  • Retipping a larger tip

    Hi all,

Apologies if this has already been posted or asked before (or even a very basic question).

I've started playing snooker and just wanted to know if it was possible to put on a larger tip (i.e. maybe a 10mm) onto a smaller ferrule?

I have to double check, but I think my current tip is around 9.5mm and I'm finding it hard to get the accuracy I need (being a beginner).

I've seen videos on retipping which is all fine, but ideally don't want to end up with a "mushroom" tip if the 10mm is larger than the ferrule.

Does this mean buying a new cue if i want a wider diameter tip?

Buy a new cue for the sake of learning to retip? Your name isn't Rockefeller is it?

Nearly 100% of the time the tip will be bigger than the ferrule (0% smaller) and hardly ever precisely the same size as the ferrule.

See the following for how to retip and shaping the tip to fit, I have put up several (as with most things snooker related) as method is a personal preference as to what works for you
Did any of the other videos you watched show the trimming and shaping part of the exercise?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnIEnmnBAYc
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9N-h...KsT90KglerqXA=
    http://handmadecues.com/re-tipping/

If you do want to buy a new cue, then maybe by a cheap cue and a box of cheapo tips and keep retipping and shaping until you are proficient and then hack at your prized cue

    have fun :snooker:

I think he just doesn't want the mushroom shaped tip because he has a bigger tip on a smaller ferrule, it's not that he doesn't want to retip( that's the way I read it anyway). I don't know any other way apart from just sticking it on and playing with it untrimed , I'm sure there is at least one pro who's tip is like that.
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

        (I was joshing )

There are a couple of pros who have an overhang or trimmed to the ferrule but that flair out.
He just needs to practise trimming and shaping a slightly over sized tip (10mm) on his ferrule (9.5mm).

Fergal O'Brien seems to have pretty much stuck a larger tip on his ferrule and left the shape reasonably the same as out of the box: https://www.snookercrazy.com/profess...er-tip-shapes/

Mark King has a larger tip on his ferrule but has gone for a mushroom tip. He has 2 tips on this list so look at the second one for a better view: https://www.snookercrazy.com/snooker-tip-shapes/.

Quite a few have the crown type flare tip like Barry Hawkins and his looks a fair but larger: https://www.snookercrazy.com/snooker-tip-shapes/

Yeah he hasn't gone mad with changing it's shape which is ok.

I have done quite a few of these as a test for guys who say they need a new cue as their tip is too small.

A guys last year was convinced that this shape wouldn't give him what he was after but I've just stuck him his second one on like this so I guess he's still happy.

We all like a certain type so I guess it's just personal.

I'm gonna do some videos as time permits to show how to cu and shape all the tips so people who don;t fit many can try it for themselves.

I'll do a quick one on how to stick them on and the various glues so I don;t have to have that part on each one.

Hi Ramon. There are pics of Peter Ebdon's on this page; if you click on his name at the top it will take you to his tip: https://www.snookercrazy.com/profess...s/#Peter Ebdon.

The picture is one of the poorest we had so doesn't really give you a good idea. Not sure if that is his normal arrangement or not as don't know his tip ans some change around the World Championships!!

Stuart Bingham changed his last year before the World's and didn't quite get there, whether it was the variance in his tip size or not only he'll know but the shape was certainly not the same. I wondered whether he just puts a new (larger) tip on when it's ready and plays with them until they wear down and are naturally smaller and then like the rest of us, doesn't want to change the tip to the last minute?

If you look at this page he has 3 examples of tip and the top one is tiny (but not as tony as Kyrem Wilsons was this year when he had a few issues. https://www.snookercrazy.com/snooker-tip-shapes/

If anything, it shows that whether you are a pro or not, when you get used to a tip it's a real mind test to have to change it. Clearly Stuart Bingham and Kyrem Wilson didn't want to go into the World's with a new tip; Bingham losing in the first round (narrowly) after deciding to go with the new tip and this year, Kyrem Wilson having real issues with his after deciding to stay with the worn down tip as he would've then had to break a new one in and was probably playing well and didn't want to do that.

Who know's, it shows there's more to this than just hitting balls!

Sorry Marc , I missed the picture on your website . thanks for info.
I know for sure he had a mushroomed tip on his cue .
lol , looks like Peter Ebdon has changed his mind and decided to join the civilization.

As for changing tips, agree with you.
It's a blody nightmare . especially for players who are using pressed tips likes elks.
You gonna have to wait until the tip naturally bed in (wear down) and this gonna take atleast couple of weeks.
Once the tip is worn down and you get used to the feeling, you do'nt want to change it, trust me!!
                    I know i would'nt .
There are players who just keep sanding a new tip until the tip is worn down . well , that's not the same thing
as playing with it and give it time until the tip naturally bed in, imo.

players who're playing with LM (multi layerd) tips, have this kind of problems in a lesser degree, imo.
                    John Haggins kamui ??
it's also about mental side of it . you change the tip is just like you have something in your mind and you
gonna have to get red of it .

It's certainly a mind game for everyone to enjoy.

I'm sure I heard that ROS changed his tip 11 times in the World Championships as he just couldn't get a tip he was truly comfortable with; I can't remember if that was this year or last but either way that's a lot of tips for one comp!

A couple of videos as promised, one short and one very in depth, both really for beginners to start as very basic and then I'll do different shape ones as time permit which won;t take long on each video as I won't need to show sticking the tip on each time as already done here. I'm still getting used to talking to a tripod so hopefully get better soon and not miss anything!
