Butterfly splices are fairly unusual, any reason for doing them this way? Does this produce just as good a playing cue while keeping the work and costs down a bit?

maybe unusual, but when done well i think they look very impressive.. the construction and prep work really needs to be precise as theres not much room for error. also you can achieve a naturally balenced cue with no weight added, so with 22'' long ebony splices you can get an ash shaft cue coming out at roughly 17 and a maple around 18oz.
as for playability the few iv made so far have been responcive.
And nothing saved on cost or work load.

I must say I am very happy with the maple butterfly Jason made me, it plays fantastic and think the craftsmanship is up there with the best.
