They were very shallow dings that any normal human would not notice but my friend must have extra sensitive sense of touch as he said they put him off his game - so I said to him stop banging his cue on the table then

That's pretty much my experience. I have gotten some reasonably sizable ones out of ash using this method and larger ones with the iron and wet cloth.

That's the only times I use the kettle and iron in our house.............

What is the best way to flatten a ferrule? It seems the ferrule isn't even and it has been sanded down previously by the owners before that the ferrule height is lower than usual...

Yeah I've done that a few times but always find it a bit dodgy next to any glue or joints, do you have a different experience?

I've done this on veneered tops that have been done with scotch/ animal glue.
As long as you don't leave it on to long, your ok keep the both wet and iron hot.
Should be ok
