Hi guys, ok this starting to annoy me, why do all the pro players seem to play with a rock hard tip, they all sound like they are cracking the cue ball with the ferrule. And yet there is a vast amount of the players out there using softer tips and they don't sound like these do. Now I understand the difference between the old club balls and the new 1g match balls, as I use these when playing, but even my cue does not sound like theirs do. Just sounds like constant miss cueing, there also seems to be less control in certain respects. I have noticed it even more when all these qualifiers are on TV in big balls with many tables as well lots of echoing.

So is it a lot harder tips......?

Pretty much yes, quite a few of the pros use the hardest tips they can get, last longer and more consistent which is why they use them.

Really, surely they must lack some of the feel from the tip......

Maybe but their cue actions are so good they can get away with it.

Hard tips = tighter CB control & better feel.
They're not for everyone though.

If you film and listen to the sound of your shot you will notice that it is not so different from that of the professionals.
it is very easy to know when the professional is with a tip s or mh, when the cloth gets covered with chalk is tip S, when the cloth gets clean is hint MH after shots.
the vast majority of professionals are now using a S or SS tip that after pressing treatment makes this tip become an MH, in this case we have a MH tip with S coating, a dry beat with generous chalk accommodation ... even as for the sound strident on the stroke, is probably connected to the time that the raw wood has dried up, conventional cue of the market is not respected all the ideal processes and the internal humidity muffles the sound and gives elasticity what is not good for plays with great use of force!

I don't like softer tips ...kinda feels like a shock absorber on the end if the cue . Don't really feel any feedback from the shot .

I reckon you could start a thread on that comment mate. I like a hard tip, not so sure they always give a better feel though?

New cue I used tonight has a Phoenix blue medium laminated tip, was first experience of one for me and I like it. Have to say it did feel really consistent, can't say I like the sound much, there is something of a "dink" in there but I can live with that for the control I got from it.

I've got used to a dink rather than a donk or a fuff.

Its a bit like what Catch said mate. It's about the feedback, and I can't get any with soft tips whatsoever.

Yes, I think once your brain accepts the sound doesn't matter and the results you get are good, you can start to block it out.

I guess it's horses for course, we all want what we want.

I prefer a harder tip but I know others who prefer a medium for feel. Also, one persons medium is another person soft 'or' hard!

I wonder how many swore by an Elk years ago for feedback and now find it must be a Talisman etc.

Yes, I think once your brain accepts the sound doesn't matter and the results you get are good, you can start to block it out.

If someone asked me what sound the tip makes for me I would say a 'donk.' If someone asked me what sound I hear when I strike the ball I don't notice any more. The only time I really noticed was when I changed from a soft tip to a hard one.

Never liked Elks that much, bit too soft for me.

I used to the old school titans, but they don't do them anymore.
Tried a few since, but 4/5 months ago I discovered Nili laminated tips through Jason on here.
Love them to bits and won't be changing any time soon.
