I'm assuming these shafts all start out the same length and ones with not enough perfect grain for 1 piece get cut for 3/4 use. 17" butt looks a bit old fashioned anyway, a lot of cue makers do around 20" plus for a 1 piece.
tbh, they could always find a shorter shaft for ultimates and any cue for that matter and splice ebony onto the end to make up the rest of the length instead of having the whole piece of ash throughout the one piece.

its more or less what happens in 3/4 cues where the bottom is just a solid block of ebony. I dont know why they dont just do that

To extend a cue though they have to glue a piece of ash to it then splice the ebony onto that, so it would have ash through the whole cue albeit with a glued section.

I've bought 2 amazing one piece TWs in the last year. Beautiful chevrons, plain ebony, play like a dream...not played with a JP ultimate so curious as to how they may compare, but these are far better than my Professional JP cue. I also think Tony Glover is right there amogst the best - not sure why he doesn't get the same mention as JP or TW - his cues are superb players.
