  • Cue advice please

I am looking to restart my game and I dug out my old power glide only to find it bent.
Looking to start a fresh and am overwhelmed by the choice.
So, a few quick questions if I may?
Are vintage cues, say Burroughs, any good to play with or are they just collectors now?
Looking on eBay, there are 100s of hand made and hand spliced cues now. Are any any good? Omin, TFS, ADR147, etc etc. I’m looking at about £150 to start again with, ideally with a case!
As a fine furniture designer and workshop man, I appreciate good workmanship, and like a nice looking piece of wood, be it, ash and ebony, or the same with a little added burr. I’m not into coloured splices.
    Any advice appreciated.
I would have preferred English but, after a quick chat, it seems some of the Thai cues may knock spots off the likes of Peradon?

You could have your powerglide straightened...

      Exciting times!

      I recently restarted playing too.

Cues...plenty of choice from China (cheap but can be decent), Thailand (I suggest Ton Praram or Maximus), UK - difficult to get a good price for John Parris, Trevor White, Mike Wooldridge, Tony Glover, or even Andy Travis, James Owen...so for your budget I would suggest contacting 2 people - Stu at Greenbaize and Andrew at ADR147 - both experienced and will pick a good cue for you at a good price. The feel at the low end can vary so much especially as the quality of wood is poor in some cases.

Vintage - not an expert, but these tend to be lighter and with bigger tips -10mm+ and often 15.5-17 oz. If not cared for, then these may also be warped. Many fakes out there too.

      Good luck.

If I was buying a cue with that budget I'd go for one of the following options:

        - Greenbaize shop - If you can get to the shop in the North East then great but if not then talk to Stu over the phone after checking out the website. He's a friendly guy and will give you good advice.
        - Andrew Ramsey - Like with Stu you'll get good advice from Andrew and he has a very large stock of cues.
        - James Butters - check out his facebook page, I've heard they are good cues and they are very good value

I hope you get a nice cue you're happy with. You could always get your Powerglide straightened which would cost about £25 but it's up to you if you feel like you need a fresh start. Good luck

You can get loads of nice cues, straight from the rack these days. T avoid waiting times I would recommend Craftsman cues or greenbaize cues. Both have decent cues in their racks ready to go.

If you want to spend that little extra, then a cue from Mike Wooldridge or o Tony Glover, both have shorter waiting times.
          Always a pleasure
