  • Considering a buying a new cue one piece or 3/4(is John Parris worth the £££)

    Hi,
I’m new on this forum, I came here looking for suggestions on how to fix the loose ferrule on my cue. After reading a few posts I’m wondering whether it might be worth investing in a new cue.

A bit of history about the current cue, it’s a Peradon royal 3/4. It’s around 18oz and the tip was originally 9mm. I’ve had it for 9years now and I’ve had a bit of work done on it.
There was a crack near the joint but was fixed by John Parris.
The tip was thinned to 8mm by John Parris.
The ferrule was replaced as well by John Parris.

Now the ferrule has come loose again.

I’m based in Nottingham and sending it to John Parris to get the ferrule replaced and retooled will cost me a bit of money.

I was thinking of investing in a 1 piece cue and was thinking of the John Parris one but its a lot of money for a cue. I have to say the work they did on my cue was very impressive

I’m wondering if there are some alternatives that you would recommend.

Is the 1 piece an improvement over the 3/4?

Worth mentioning I play pool 80% and snooker 20%

Looking forward to hearing your views, cheers!

Countless cue makers out there that are better than Parris, but may not hold their value should you wish to sell at a later date. 1 piece has less to go wrong and can provide a better feel but a well made 3/4 cue is every bit as good as a 1 piece and it's mainly down to transport, 1 benefit for a 3/4 cue over a 1 piece for pool though is you can take the butt off for venues with tight space around the table.

Cheers Dave. I hadnt thought of the logistics issues but I think I’ll be ok.
Because of the price difference between 3/4 and one piece and John Parris Cues, I was hoping that there would be some cue makers out who might make 1 piece cues that might come in cheaper than the John Parris 3/4.

I take your point in resale value, my budget would be around £100ish unless it’s a JP.

Maybe contact Tony Glover (cues.co.uk) down near Swadlincote (that near you?) about a repair job?
As has been said, there are many other cuemakers out there that can do a repair and also make you a new cue but you initial budget probably wont do it
        Up the TSF! :snooker:

Cheers dean! I’ve contacted Tony, his quote for the repair was very reasonable. I will be repairing it, however, i might still be tempted to get a one piece

John parris is overrated at best! Ive had two parris cues which i have sold on. Far better cue makers around. £100ish is really cheap for a cue thesedays.

I wasn’t thinking of getting a new cue at this price. Everyone seems to say that there are cheap and better cues out there but i can’t seem to find any and I’ve been watching a lot of videos and reading a few posts. What cue maker would you recommend Mathias having owned 2 Parris Cues yourself?

Andy Travis, is worth contacting about the repair and also getting a cue made too.

Id second the vote for Andy Travis, well made and quick service...

You could give Robert Osbourne a ring, see what he has.... Good cue Maker

I swear by glover but even a 2nd hand cue is out of your price range. Andy travis is decent. Have a look to see what adr147 has in stock. He has cues at a reasonable price.
