I sharp knife is a good start as you will almost always hit the ferrule if you and the side of the tip...
Can take the joint out, without damaging the old shaft.

      Shops are:
Craftsman Cues Leeds - but is outside of Leeds, lol. It is just off a motorway though, but not sure if M1 or A1M. http://www.craftsmancues.com/index.html
      Chesworth is in Sheffield https://www.chesworthcues.com/
      GBL (Greenbaize) is in Doncaster

Some questions in bold may help you....

Currently I'm using a John Parris Regal Cue, 19.4oz 57" 3/4 with what was originally a 9.5mm tip and over the years of sanding tips etc i believe is around about 8.7mm now according to my callipers. Im after changing my cue totally, and to be honest, as much as i'd love to buy another John Parris cue, i simply don't have the money to go and splash out on one!
So you like the JP bit\kudos?

Im after an ash cue, approx 18-18.5oz 57.5" 3/4 cue with a 10mm tip and one that has the "real wood" feel to it, ie not a lacquered finish which gets sticky etc...
A new finish is easily done and there are plenty of options out there

Could anyone recommend a certain brand or place i could go to have a little look at some? I never really looked too much into cues before, as soon as i started playing i decided to go all out and buy myself a Parris cue, and i love it - i just feel that i need a little bit of a change, something to spruce my game up a little bit!
So what do you like about it? My guess is that different people go for different things. I'm not going to open that can of worms, but feel free to start a new thread, lol.

apologies if i have posted this in the wrong thread!

      many thanks!

Is the join totally in ebony?

If so the "extension" could be put there to make up for having to shorten the shaft a bit?

I'm far from an expert, but this shouldn't cause much disruption to the weight and feel of it?

This depends on how much needs to be taken off... To get it to 10..

I have a terrible memory, lol, and assumed it was a 1pc, hence the complicated solutions ie adding to length at butt end, with joint etc.....

One the basis that the ferrule has been "sanded" down or reduced through tip changing, then the cue may still be as was when 9.5mm, so not much at all?

Personally I think 10mm is going to be a huge jump after 8.7mm, without Luke having tried one - it feels\seems massive to me from my 9.5mm, and 8.8\9mm tiny.....

If you talking about the cue I did... Yes it started off as a broken one piece that he wanted turned into a ¾.

You would be very surprised at just how much can be taken off a cue this way.
Plus as cues move over time, they don't always stay round, which means you would have to cut it father down to get it to 10mm

Surely the most economical way to get the cue you want is to buy a new, off the shelf Parris cue. Then sell the cue you have. The prices that Parris cues seem to achieve on the second hand market are close to or higher than their new prices. I watched a Parris Classic sell for £310 + £13.95 postage on ebay a week ago. The new price is £320. Stop trying to spend money fixing an old cue. Sell it and replace it.

Sorry to jump in here, but Green Baize is in Thornaby, which is closer to Middlesbrough than Doncaster.

Can highly recommend this place if you're willing to drive up there. Stu is one of the nicest and most knowledgeable guys around when it comes to cues. The range is incredible, and if you find something you like but isn't quite at your specs then Craig (resident cue doctor) can make alterations for a small fee.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling on now. Good luck!

to be totally honest, id be happy enough going back to a 9.5mm tip, just feel that the tip i have at the moment is far too small for my liking! doesnt help when others i play with also comment on the tip size being very small (which was already going through my head) plus the fact i seem to be missing the simplest of balls at times. Lol i dont really know what i want to do, im looking for an excuse as to why im struggling so much and the cue is getting it at the moment but i fear that it may just be in my head...
what a frustrating, yet addictive game this is....

i think you will find it is totally in your head haha.

if you are happy with the cue apart from the ferrule, get john to put a new ferrule on for you. and be on your way. that way you wont be messing about with the cue.

i also think the 9.5mm will help you and centre ball striking will be easier

You can't just put a larger ferrule on lol.

i thought the cue was originally a 9.5 and had been sanded down to 8.whatever so i thought you could just put the original size back on no?
