the cue was originally 9.5mm and is now approx 8.7mm on the ferrule due to sanding over the years etc
what a frustrating, yet addictive game this is....

i wouldve thought you wouldnt touch the wood itself? and maybe like at the base of the ferrule its still 9.5ish? but towards the top where its been sanded in its 8.7?

Ahh more accurate info required 😆
Is it just top of ferrule near tip end smaller or whole ferrule and cue shaft too ( if that how the hell did you manage that by the way ?)

nope, so the official size/diameter etc is 8.6mm at the top of the ferrule, 8.8mm at the bottom of the ferrule, and about half an inch down, the wood returns to 9.5/10mm..

however, it appears my cue has shrunk too as what used to be 57" is now 56.2" haha

No, as the ferrule will be smaller than 9.5 for the tip to be 8.7mm I think it was.
Would have to take the cue down by an inch or more, to get it back to 9.5

I thought the cue\wood measurement near the ferrule would be the key one?

Yes it would be but with the way it's been sanded, the is a good chance that he has hit the wood and ferrule doing it...

I think people have assumed it is tip changing related, as opposed to "cleaning" shaft....

I see what you mean but if he is sanding his tips the way I think he is.... He will be sanding the ferrule and catching the shaft sometimes to..

Ever considered trying a mushroom type tip? You could leave the cue as is and play with a 10mm tip. It’s worth trying before spending money. They may look silly, but they play ok.
