  • Security chip in cues

I mentioned this a while ago and couldn't remember where id seen it, just found the video. Dean Jones Cues on facebook. Though i imagine if any of these cues have made their way to China this has already been circumvented.

I recall discussions in the past about this, personally I would prefer a tracker that would fit into a cue, so it can be traced

That is great! Would certainly give the fakes a hard time.

By today's standards there's no reason why a chip couldn't track, ID, secure and turn on a TV if that's what players want...

NFC tags aren't particularly secure. There's free software readily available which can overwrite or disable even read-only tags. I presume these tags have the ability to be over written anyway, if they have the option to customise.

Serial numbers are less sophisticated, but would probably be more useful if a cue is stolen. The police share serial numbers with pawn shops and trade in shops which can be used for checking when someone comes in trying to sell. I can't imagine these places are going to scan cues with their mobiles unless tagging becomes very widespread.

How would you power it? How would it get it's location fix? how would it communicate it's location? I like the idea of an NFC chip, because at least it's something, rather than nothing....and it can be personalised with details so if lost it could be recovered (assmuning people knew to scan the NFC chip). If people are going to nick things, they will find a way.

I'm thinking of personalising and replacing the badges on some of my cues, and possibly putting an NFC chip under the badge. Not really as a security thing, but to record cue specs and history actually on the cue.

as you know, the badge can/does add value to certain cues, so not an option for many
And I doubt a personalised badge wont stop some thieves!

there is a tracker system called TrackerR, which works well, and I have thought to try it in my case, but it is not small enough for a cue - yet

they should put a wedding ring into a cue, I think they are the original "RFID/tracker"; as my wife knows just when I am about to skip off somewhere without her and to start enjoying myself, off goes the phone!
