cueing actions/tips/ferrules/chalking

having recently broken the ferrule on my cue i have had for around 12 years it indented on one side first i.e pushed the ferrule back into the wood on just the one side this also happened with my previous cue which was my fathers i used for about 7 years. I also go through tips at an alarming rate i always seem to chip the tips in the same place and have to replace them (this always happens after a mis cued screw shot)

i was always taught to try to keep the action the same every time so i think i grab the cue exactly the same way round every time i screw which means i hit the tip on one side (the exact same point) every time does this cause my problems with tips and ferrules or is it just bad luck

i am also a perpetual chalker after having it drummed into me as a youngster chalk after every shot may i be chalking to hard and too much ?

anyone got any ideas or similar problems and it wasnt a cheap cue btw everyone it was a lewis and wilson top model (mastercues of england) handmade etc when they existed if anyone remembers them !

Hi Morse,
You sure seem heavy on your equipment!Are you playing 100 frames a day? You seem to have decided that it is something that you are doing that is causing this rather than something wrong with the cue.when you say that you are always replacing tips,how often do you mean?More than every couple of months seems too often to me,Do you use the file or sandpaper a lot?
The ferrule should not get too much of a bashing on a normal shot as a lot of the shock is transmitted through the centre directly into the shaft and not through the shoulder of the ferrule.If the ferrule is loose however then the shoulder would get a beating when a lot of side was used.
I would be discussing fitting a threaded ferrule instead of a smooth one with my cue repairer.
None of us would consider buying anything but a straight cue,but every one advocates using it in the same position when you pick it up.I don't see any problem in using it in any position myself,in fact,I sometimes swivel it before taking a shot,at least it evens out the wear on the tip.
The other solution is to play like Eddie Charlton!

nah i dont replace them more than every couple of months or sometimes longer but it is allways because the tip has "collapsed" on one side i think i am too old to cure thinking about twisting everytime or the such like but i will try. i am still waiting for trevor to contact me so maybe he can put a threaded ferrule on a nice new cue for me but i am not too worried just wondered if it happened to anyone else perhaps i will just stop trying to "break the pockets" , oh and my cue was super straight looking at the damage of the crack and the tips as evidence i think it is because i hold it in the same place every time and after years of constant screw shots only on one side of the tip it causes the damage, so like rafa benitez i think rotation is the key !!!!!

and or a harder tip.? The Talisman soft which are a bit harder than the everyday Elks last a lot lot longer. Being laminated eith 9 layers they are thicker too.

Sorry Morse I've only just noticed your question. No I've played in pool leagues but never snooker always thought I was simply not good enough. Stupid really, but not once did I ever think of the handicapping system used.

so you live in the place with the best and biggest snooker league in the uk and you havent tried it. Thats sad get yourself into a club by you! whereabouts are you in mids i can give you some club names if i can remember them there were 7 leagues last time i played in it and you can find the correct division for your standard and you get free sandwiches ;-D
