Has anybody ever tried use Wenge as cue butt material?
Local woodcrafter recommended it to me, because it heacy and hard as ebony, but said it would be difficult to work on, and glueing is difficult too.

            http://www.woodworkerssource.net/Mer...ory_Code=Wenge

I think its beautiful tree, but if it isnt suitable to butt, I will go for ebony.

            Thanks.

so i value my hard earned knowledge very highly. knowledge is power!

if i give away my knowledge, i lose my power...

BUT, i will tell you that epoxy is a very good glue to use. as are others.

at end of the day, glue is glue and virtually any type will do the job. what i mean is, you don't have to worry about your cue falling apart whatever glue you use.

                apart from pritt stick...
                May I share a poem?

To get he had tried yet his store was still meager
To a wise man he cried in a voice keen and eager "Pray tell how I may successfully live?"
And the wise man replied, "To get you must give."
As to giving he said "What have I to give?, I have scarce enough bread and of course one must live, but I would partake in life's bountiful store"
Came the wise man's response "Then you must give more."
The lesson he learnt to get was forgotten,
Toward mankind he turned a love new begotten
And as he gave of himself in useful living,
                Then joy crowned his days.....
For he grew rich in giving.

for myself, it's a jealously guarded secret. why? well let's put it this way, nobody told me anything when i started out.
This is also known as the cycle of destruction. Something someone never did for, or did to you, and you return the favour to the world. The world becomes a worser place as a result. I've been all over the world, Asia, Australia, Japan, Africa, United States, China, i dont know why but this cycle seems most apparent in the UK. I wish I knew the answer.

so i value my hard earned knowledge very highly. knowledge is power!
And so is giving. A true measure of a man is not in what he has but what he is able to give.

if i give away my knowledge, i lose my power...
I think in the reverse direction. When I share my knowledge, I feel empowered because it means that God has blessed me with special talents and abilities few know about that I am able to give.

There is nothing worse in my life than not being able to give. The moment I am unable to contribute to another's life in a special way, I begin feeling a sense of spiritual deadness.

                i'm a miserable b*****d
Why not try giving? A good majority of the happiness I've gained throughout life was in the measure of what I gave. Most people have it in reverse gear, (thinking that receiving is the key to happiness) So they try and try, moving to another country with beautiful beaches, weather, people, life, but still fail to find it.

Of all the gifts I've given away in my life, the greatest of them all is knowledge and wisdom.

                Nothing compares to such gifts.

Remember that what you do for yourself dies with you. But what you do for another, lives forever.

I get religous nutters knocking my door round here quite often talking in riddles like that.

Harmless enough you just chuck em a few pennies towards their ganja, shout praise de lord tree times mon and they go on their way.

Amazing how I wrote so many words and the only word you saw was 'God'.

                      And i'm not religious.

Actually I read no further than the poem, It just reminded me of the nutters who called a couple of days ago.

I've no doubt Mike will pass on his knowledge at some time, maybe to an apprentice a son or even in a book. Unless he gets that big recording contract he dreams of, has a big bonfire and becomes the next Elvis.

                              Then maybe you should.

People come to this forum because they need help. Holding back knowledge that you know renders the forum useless. Why even bother to make a post and waste your time when you can type with the same amount of energy and help, rather than make a post of 500 words and say 'sorry, I'm not sharing'. Better to not post at all?

Just imagine yourself going an engineering forum for help and they tell you 'Go figure it out yourself, it took me years to learn'. Doesn't that completely defeat the purpose of a forum?

People ask these questions because obviously they need help. And if I could, you can bet your life that I will help in anyway I can. After all, its not like its going to rob you of your business or anything. These are ametuer cuemakers, hobbyists for god's sakes. Most dont even know where to begin. They're just trying to build a cue to be happy with. Not everyone who wants to make a cue wants to do it to kill your business, what kind of thinking is that? In fact, its the person making the cue that's most important, you could teach someone how to make a cue from A-Z but that doens't mean he could get the same results. We all have different hands. There's enough for everyone. Even if 1000 cue companies were born tomorrow, there would still be room for more. And I reckon, you probably have someone who has given you something in your life without condition simply because they want to help you? You have to put yourself in a person's position before making your statement, how would you want to be treated if you were that person? If you needed help?

Personally, I can kind of see where you are coming from with the post above.

However, I think perhaps Mike's words could be taken a little too literally with regard to him appearing guarded about his knowledge. I'm sure he would be fairly willing (to a reasonable degree) when it comes to offering advice or passing knowledge on to others, but, this is an open forum, so it could be considered foolish to go so far as to answer any questions that could come his way.

Speaking for myself, I couldn't be sure I'd want to cough up all I know about the subject in question either. Still, I do try to offer any help I can, especially where I feel I have knowledge that could be of value or interest to others reading, but, there would be a limit to what I think would be wise to divulge.

I'm sure if you were to take a look through other threads in the forum, that you may well find Mike has offered some knowledge or opinion that people reading have found useful.

Occasionally I'd say we are all capable of posting what might appear a little closed or defensive, but that shouldn't, and probably doesn't, define what we're about.
