I don't really care what cues the pros are using but what I have to say is
that I find what Trevor said earlier in this thread is absolutely gentlemanly.
That is what makes me proud of having ordered one of his cues. Not the
fact that two of the top 16 players are useing one of them.

Apparently he said it's about 100 years old.

i remeber an interview with him a while ago and he said he got it from a friends gararge but it needed some work so rodney hind did some work on the butt. prob why his cue has a burrwood splice where normal tom newman 1370 cues have a redish splice, think its puduk.

- some more about Ali Carter's cue...
Smurf's cue is one of the nicest old cues I have ever had the pleasure of picking up. Cracking bit of wood and beautiful looking cue with dark mature ash.
Ali Carter's cue is a very old Thurston's cue which he has had since he was a boy. That too is a lovely classic looking mature old cue and plays very firm - very little whip for such an old cue. The butt needed work when he got it and although barely visible (certainly not under the TV cameras) it was lengthened slightly by Parris by splicing in four ebony splices.
Ali actually snapped the shaft of his cue many years ago in the club - clean off! He put his cue up in the air after missing a shot and caught the tip and shaft in the suspended ceiling! It was such a clean break that he managed to get it repaired and glue back together and it has remained that way, and touch wood (excuse the pun) ever since.
He has, however, always been nervous of it just giving way one day so had had numerous cues made over the years but never yet found one he likes. He loves old cues and is always on the look out for something special in that department. I have a lovely Tom Reece that I play with that he loves, but it's a little too whippy for him to play with. Okay for my game though and I'd never part with it!
He had his cue after last years Worlds, somewhat reluctantly, but massively more convenient for transporting and JP did a great job and the cue plays no different.

There is something about these guys that play with old cues that they seem to effortlessly generate more spin on the cueball than those with newer more modern cues. Apart from Ronnie and Robertson who use modern cues, only Murphy, Carter and Swail seem to generate huge amounts of screw and spin with very little effort and they all use very old cues. Probably coincidence but consider how many cues they have probably tried out it makes you think whether an older cue does possess better playing characteristics than modern ash.

Yeah, I would be inclined to agree with you there. I have played with my old cue for nearly 20 years now and could never switch to a newly made cue. Old cues just have a whole different feel and touch to new cues in my opinion. Difficult to put your finger on exactly why that should be though !
