Never heard that about the splice.

I had an article in Pot black magazine ages ago, where Steve said that around 1987 he heard a horrible noise when he took a shot. He imediately had John Parris take a look only to find that the wood in the ferrel had cracked, and john had to cut it down to find new wood. Steve tried it after and said that it felt like he had lost a foot off it, so he had John re do the butt end to lengthen it which then upset the balance, so to regain the balance had John put a joint in which is why the joint goes straight through the splice and not in the normal place for a 3/4 cue. If you look at the pics before and after you can definitely see how the butt grew the splices originally were about much further away from his chin and then after when he took the shot the splices ended up passing right over his chin and ending up in view from the front.
