  • B and W Billiards and Burroughs and Watts

    Hi,

Please could anybody tell me if B and W Billiards, not Burroughs and Watts, but if B and W Billiards make good cues and what the quality is, and maybe some information on the company.

ITS A QUESTION FOR YOU ADR147!

Also, does Burroughs and Watts still make cues today, they are a legendry company many moons ago, in the early twentieth century, but do they still make cues today?, If they do, are they good?

B AND W BILLIARDS IS A DIFFERENT COMPANY TO BURROUGHS AND WATTS LTD

There is a lot of confusion between B and W Billiards, who make modern cues, and Burroughs and Watts who were a famous company from the past.

Burroughs and Watts had a very famous hall were all of the greats played, it was just as famous as the Thurstons Hall.

seen the cues - they are ok actually but a bit over priced. i don't think the name is an accident!!

but then these days the original B&W's name is owned by crooks who charged a lady (i know this for sure because she brought it to me for a tip change) £250 for a machine made master billiards cue worth £20-£40 claiming it to be handmade and top class!!!

I'd never think they would charge £250 for a £20 cue!

the company you are both talking about the proper Burroughs and Watts was bought out in the seventys by rileys it became riley burwat the in the 1980's back to riley.riley never patented the name and let it go untill this company picked it up reg it at companys house (i think) and began using it.

Assets of the billiard trade were changing hands and identities with regular frequency in the 1960s and 70s, and the exact ownership behind each trading name is not that easy to uncover. However, the information I have available tells me this:

The original Burroughes & Watts, established 1836, were bought by the Hurst Park Group in 1967 who then sold the equipment and repair side of the company to Riley's for £55,000, retaining the property portfolio. In 1969 these two businesses were amalgamated by Riley's to form "Riley Burwat Ltd" and at this time Burroughes & Watts ceased being used as a trading name.

I understand that the company currently trading as Burroughes & Watts Ltd., was set up in 1986 by Messrs Davies & Ward (no connection with the original company as far as I know) at that time being called "Burroughes & Watts Cues Ltd." Malcolm Jones, the current owner, took this company over in 1995. The use of this name was subject to legal challenge in 2002, and the right of Mr. Jones to use the brand name was established. Shortly after this the company became "Burroughes & Watts Ltd."
