  • £300 for a stick. Oh pool.

Hi there people in the world.
I am a gentleman looking for a cue to play 8ball pool with. Mostly I would like it to be a good one and to that end I am prepared to commit up to 300 of our British pounds. Slightly less monies would be good but I wouldn't like to pass up a real beauty for the sake of £20 squids so I am flexible.
Browsing around this forum with my eyes I get the impression that certain people and others may be able to help point me in the right direction (the small end right?).

I know what I like having played before a few times, my friends have Trevor White and Mike Wooldridge cues and I borrow them, mostly. I think they are getting annoyed at me winning with their cues so I 'spect it's time to get me own stick.

Generally I like a tip of about 8.5mm, something with a nice and smooth shaft and nothing too crappy because I wouldn't like to look like I had robbed a pikey for it.

What I am really looking for is advice on whether to approach a cuemaker or enter the Russian Roulette of Ebay or even if anyone has a nice cue for sale. I'm not sure if my £300ish will stretch to a custom made cue, of the ilk I am accustomed to playing with, and I don't like to play with Asian cues either because of 'Street-Cred' as Radio1 DJ Colin Murray would put it.

    Ideas?

You've said yourself that you've tried them and Mike and Trevor make nice cues, so why not try one of them?

I would suggest that Trevor will definitely be able to build you a cue to your exact spec for around that money, unless you want anything fancy splicing etc.

Personally, I'm in the same boat and recently had an 8.5mm cue built by Trevor for playing 8-ball with, so this route gets my recommendation!

      I second this!
      You've answered your own question.
I too have one of Trevors cues I play 8 ball with!

        Hi Gus,

A Predator and with Z2 shaft seems to be a good choice.

i have the Predator with Z^2 shaft, great combo, but the tip is little bit small and alot of people use 314 shaft(stronger) worth to try. never tried UK made pool cue, so can't judge anything, but currently waiting for my snooker cue from Trevor.

I think we're talking about UK 8 ball here so Predator cues are not appropriate. The cues we are talking about are basically snooker cues with smaller tips (there is a recent thread about this). A US pool cue would have a large tip and probably be a bit heavy too. Uk 8 ball tables have small balls 2" and very small pockets compared to US tables.
We also don't go in for different shafts and all that. I think that the North America seems to have a very different ideas about cue making. I think it's more of an art or a craft here.
I think John Parris makes 9 ball cues though doesn't he. I think Tony Drago and Steve Davis have examples.
I'm sure you'll be well impressed with your cue from Trevor Jay!

              Hi gus,

You said you could pay upto £300 but in my opinion, you can get your perfect cue that it superb quality for £100 - £150 less than that, it may seem a lot but a cue will give you confidence but at the end of the day it is up to the player to play to his potential (Potential!)

yeah, my predator tip is about 11.75mm, for US 9-ball, i think we are talking different "pool" here. Hopefully you are right about my new Trevor White cue, as people said that his cue won't dissappoint the owner

Thanks for the advice fellow gents, I ended up choosing a second-hand Trevor White cue from a friend who has ordered a new one because he felt the tip at around 8.35mm is marginally too small for him. Also the length at 58 and a half inches is 'half an inch' too long.
I think I got a pretty good deal, it suits me perfectly, came in below budget and the shaft is smoother than any other cue I've touched.

Also thanks to MW for replying to my posting and I would have chosen one of his fine sticks were it not for said piece of good fortune.
