    Hi

I forgot to mention - this Trevor White does not know how to work with ebony at all. From the conversations here, it seems to me that he doesn't even know the density of ebony, not to mention the differences between Gaboon and Macasar.

I work with ebony to produce hifi tips (please see attachment). Ebony is called "iron wood". If you don't know how work with it, you will just ruin your tools! Canadian woodworking is already quite good, but I have to import tools from Europe.

Why ebony? I don't want to waste my time on this topic anymore.

    Thanks,
    Snookaman

Woods are often called different things in different parts of the world. Generally Iron Wood is not an Ebony (diospyros) it is a different species. As for Trevor White, well he makes world class cues, second to none. End of. The use of heavy timbers for the butt this is mostly for balance reasons as far as I am aware (could be wrong though )

I'm no cue expert, but isn't most of this talk a waste of time? From what I know from here Trevor's cues have been compared with all the other great cues out there (by people who have actually used them) and I've never read a single comment that would suggest anyone would trade their Trevor White cue for something else?

Isn't the proof in the pudding? All this talk about different woods and density, but everytime I ever read a comment by someone who bought one of Trevor's cues, they say they are excellent?

So is there really anyone out there that would know anything relevant enough to make a better cue?

I can only assume that anyone who knows cues better than Trevor White, must be a very wealthy well known cue maker himself, as he would surely have to be since he knows so much?

I don't want to become embroiled in a big discussion over nothing here, but would like to get one last point over, especially to Snookaman.

I replied to 'your' thread, to offer some views on why the cue you spoke about had a hollow part to the base of the cue butt. If you look at my posts again, you will see that I mentioned that Gabon ebony is no different to numerous other African ebonies, and, also mentioned the kind of weight which most 16" three quarter, ebony cue butts are when complete, with a joint fitted.

Then in my second post, I made some comments about the materials for cue butts, stating how the significance of the material is of far less importance than many would think. I tried to clarify what characteristics ebony has, and, tried to describe how variable it can be, even when it is sourced from the same region of Africa.

I offered this information to give you (and maybe others who read it) some more knowledge of ebony and the limitations of its affect on the playability of any given cue. There was no agenda or bias in my views, they were just views offered in response to your questions, and, were based on years of having used this material from many many of the various global locations which ebony is sourced from.

I also vaguely remember you asking me about a cue you saw somewhere, although whether it was Ebay I can't recall. I don't remember you stating it was clearly a cue of substandard manufacture, and moreover, can't see how you'd know that without seeing it in reality in front of you. But it could definitely have been in poor condition, I wouldn't argue with that.

I can't remember either whether I gave any opinion on the hollow cue butt you spoke of in any private message, although again, I might have done. One thing is for absolute certain however, I am totally aware that some cues have hollowed butts, or butts made with other 'weight reducing' properties. This is nothing new to me.

To answer your original question though, I suggested the hollow might have been soley due to the machining of the butt end to accept a quick release butt joint, and no more than that.

I can't see why you have apparently attempted to convince others here, that my posts or thoughts on this thread are wrong and of no value though, especially when it has been done in the way it has. Maybe you'd like to have a think on that, or maybe not, that's for you to decide.

I don't look to promote myself or my work here at all, I just offer a few opinions on a few matters as and when I either can, or feel like doing so. My posts are made with the intention of offering information, so people can use a little more informed judgement in considering the matters raised.

I won't get into some of the other posts made in this thread by others, as much of it just isn't worth the tinyest moment of time I'd have to give in thinking on it, I'll just say no more on this one.

I wish you the best of luck, whatever cue you use.

We are talking wo different things.

Iron Wood (two wrords) is a descriptive term for ebony meaning it is as hard as iron.

Ironwood (one word) is Olneya Tesota that is what you are talking about.

                        Hi Trever,

Sorry, Trevor I may have offended you. There are too many cue makers who really just doing marketing but not making cues. Somehow I just get the impression that you are one of them.

Even "world class" cue maker such as Kevin DeRoo give me the impression that he is not a "true" cue maker. He is employing American pool technique to snooker cue. So he has come up with composite ash cues. Some people may buy that idea, but I don't. No glue is perfect and no one can avoid tiny air bubles building up in the glue when the pieces are put together. I tried to contact him for a visit to his workshop in Langley which is an hour drive from Vancouver. He never get back to me. He may have just built several cues and one of which goes to Marco Fu. The rest of the cues may have built somewhere else.

                        Thanks,
                        Snookaman

PS: Cue making is a time consuming and tedious job. Previously, I played 4 times a week. As I am working on this project to rebuild/refurnish my cue butt, I am playing just once a week. Besides, the investment on new tools is already high enough for a £400 cue. I think it is better to leave the job to the specialized experts. However, working on wood is fun - that's the only return of my invesment!
